My Three Words for 2017

December 29, 2016 By Cara Lumen

Planet

At the beginning of each new year, I select three words to guide me on my journey. These are qualities or values or concepts that I want to explore, develop, embrace and emphasize during that year.

I learned this from Chris Brogan several years ago. Choosing three meaningful or motivational words allows me to evaluate what I’ve accomplished, notice where I am, and make choices that’ll guide me in a direction that’s aligned with my core purpose.

For 2016, my words were “determination”, “trust” and “explore”. I determinedly explored my connection with nature through Shamanism and expanded my connection with the world through a course in subtle group energy. I deepened my trust by following my instincts that said I needed to venture further online to connect with the people who would nurture and guide me on this next phase of my journey.

As I continue to let my life unfold, I deepen my trust. I trust myself to recognize the nudges and insights that keep coming my way. I trust the universe to offer signs and signals to guide me.

Would you like to choose three words to help shape your experiences in the coming year?

What is your overall objective?

What qualities or values would you like to develop or explore in the coming year? What is your over-arching objective?

For 2017, my overall goal is to immerse myself more deeply in my spiritual exploration, to find meaningful and effective ways to direct energy to the well-being of our universe and share what I discover in a clear, insightful and inspiring manner.

My three words for 2017 are “broaden”, “deepen” and “change”

Broaden. I expand my spirituality and my personal awareness by broadening my participation in the planet, particularly in the form of focused energy. I broaden my personal awareness by questioning all my beliefs to make certain they represent my current values and that they’re based on my truth rather than on the truth of others.

I broaden my empathy and develop the core value of inclusion as I increase my understanding of others by actively listening to the concerns of persons who have a different frame of reference than I do. I broaden my participation in the world by joining with others in meditations for peace and harmony and balance. I open myself to ways to extend the reach of my words into the lives of people who will benefit from them.

Deepen. Deepen relates to my inner work. I deepen my awareness of nature and allow its organic flow to guide me. I deepen my awareness of the natural cycles and allow myself to flow with them. I deepen my knowledge of subtle realms and dimensions and apply concepts that resonate. I deepen my understanding of the concepts in Shamanism and Taoism that call to me. I take what resonates and learn new ways to apply those concepts more consciously in my daily life.

Unfolding is at the core of my life. Increased mindfulness continues to deepen my connection with my inner world. I mindfully move more consciously through my day, seeking to hear the messages of nature, my body, my soul and the invisible world around me.

Change. I feel myself being drawn on a great adventure. It has to do with the exploration of subtle realms and higher dimensions. I’m willing to change. I’m open to new possibilities. I feel myself being pulled to a level of exploration that’s taking me deeper within than I’ve ever gone before. I’m connecting with the “nowhere that we came from”, the great nothingness, the universes beyond the universes. Although I’m human, I’ll explore beyond the limitation of my body suit and report what I find.

Awareness + choice = change.

Broaden
Deepen
Change

I’m certain these three words will take me on great adventures and lead me to awareness I didn’t expect.

What are your three words for the coming year?

My Three Words for 2021 – Deep Listening, Exploration, Unfolding

Creating Conscious Connection

Ashe
(“Ah-Shay”)
The Creative in me honors the Creative in you!

Goals are good and goals can be overwhelming.  I’m a go-with-the-flow person. I rely almost exclusively on my inner voice to guide me in the moment.

However, identifying an over-arching theme might be a good idea.  Chris Brogan suggests we choose three words for the year.   I have done that for a lot of years. Here are the three words I have chosen for this year.

Deep Listening. Since my work is unfolding, the first focus for the coming year that I choose is Deep Listening.  That means moving to my Still Point multiple times throughout my day to let go of my human thoughts and sit in silent serenity.  I am learning that I don’t have to make decisions other than in the moment. I just let my inner nudges show up and I explore where they take me.

Exploration is my second word for the year.  I feel pretty certain that most of what I offer is going to come from my inner work, my journeys, and my unexpected insights. That means I am to stay aware, move into deep listening, and when a nudge shows up, I am to take time to examine and explore – a little or a lot, depending on how I feel about the topic of the moment.  Here I go adventuring…

Unfolding.  I started to chose “change” but this is such a huge period of change. Then I considered “evolution” which seems huge. But in this dramatic and rapidly changing world, I can only sit in thoughtful awareness and listen to my inner voice guide me to my next steps.  I let life unfold and shape things as they come.

Deep Listening, Exploration, Unfolding.

What three words will you chose to open up new portals for you this year?

Life Lessons from a Lump of Clay

Sometimes it seems like there is no rhyme nor reason why our lives are the way they are or how we turned out the way we did.  But there is.  There are choices and beliefs and interactions that created our path, our journey. We are exactly where we should be considering what we thought and did.

There are many circumstances that are pushing and shoving and moving and shaping our lives.  It helps to think about some of them and where they might lead.

Cara Lumen, spiritual philosopher and founder of the Deeper Song Community is a cosmic explorer who consciously travels into the unseen world to serve as a bridge to help us expand our relationship with the spiritual world. She shares what she learns and guides us to the next level so we can sing a deeper song.

***INNER WORK***

Rediscovery

I drew the oracle card “Rediscovery” on the first of this new year and I am thinking about what that might mean.  I will look for gifts I have that I have left by the wayside.  I will look for ideas that organically fell into second place along the road.  And I’m going to look at what I can repurpose in this rapidly changing new world. In this moment, I only have a vague feeling about what that will be. And it may not be a tangible step.  It may be introspective work, an expanded spiritual practice, even a review of something I used to do from my present viewpoint of what is unfolding.

What will you rediscover?  Go exploring and look in all the corners….

Our Inner Strength

“When things fall apart around you, you’re really left with what you’ve developed inside you.”- Rick Hanson, Ph.D.

I stopped to consider what I have developed inside me that keeps me moving inward and upward.

I have a deep and varied pattern of spiritual practices.  I am mindfully moving to my Still Point more often during my day to encourage moments of deep tranquility and introspection.

I have taken what may be an intuitive proactive step as I become clear what my role is in humanity today.  I am not an in-person, interactive contributor to the well-being of our world. My work is to help us raise our vibration.  My work is in the inner world, where I explore and interpret and share what I figure out.  But my main job, my core work is with vibration – learning to raise our vibration with conscious awareness and encouraging those who can hear the message to do the same.  Not everyone will hear this call, but as we each move more deeply into our role as Light Beings, others will recognize it in themselves and make the choice to consciously join us.

There are many things I cannot and am not meant to do on the physical plane.  So I focus on what I have developed inside and share that.

What have you got going for you?  What do you need to add to your life pattern that would expand and elevate your experience and your place of service?  What is not yours to do? Let that go.  Keep building your strength within and rely on your inner voice.

***OUTER WORK***

How are you Nurturing Yourself and What do you Need to Change?

We slip into destructive patterns without realizing it.  I have been watching too much news and it finally caught up with me.  I very much enjoy the fabulous minds and incredible vocabulary of cable news, but the subject matter has been like watching a horror movie.  Even with change in sight, and hope on the horizon, I was being drawn deeper and deeper into despair. It even manifested a feeling of depression over the holidays – and I have never been depressed in my life.

Finally, I made a major change.  There are wonderful music channels on my TV.  I love both classical music and New Age and my life has been woefully short on both.  Until now.

What kind of habits have you fallen into that you need to break?

It easy to identify habits you would like to create. But what habits do you have that are doing you harm? And how will you change that?

Use Music to Heal

Music is a powerful vibration.  It can soothe you and challenge you and lift you up.  Music comes from the soul of the composer and the musician – a gift from them to you. Go exploring into musical venues you have only dabbled in before and see where it leads you.  I will explore jazz more.  I like it very much but it seems to be third on my list.  There is a difference between light classical music and classical music. Composers really give it to you in classical music.  It can be very demanding. And stirring. And motivating.  It makes you feel like you should rise up and go take on something big. Light classical feels a bit more joyous and less demanding.  I get to choose to fit my mood and my need.

Focus on an instrument you love to hear. I’m a cello fan and a saxophone fan – both low, mellow sounds.  I play the native flute and have played the piano in the past.  And I have sung in lots of quartets and choral groups.  Odd that I let music slip out of my life.

I have 8 drums but seem focused on two, a buffalo drum I made in a workshop 30 years ago and a small djembe from Africa.  There is something very freeing and releasing about drumming.

Notice the vibrations you allow into your life. Notice what you listen to and how it affects you.  Silence is good too. It has a healing sound of its own.  Humming as a focused vibration is healing. Making up songs is liberating and creative.

Make a rattle out of popcorn in an empty spice jar.  Make a drum out of the bottom of an empty plastic container and experiment with your own rhythms. There is a way to play two spoons!

How are you spending your downtime and are you aware  of how it affects you?

Make conscious changes that include adding more sound experience to your life and notice the difference it makes.

Make Room for Change and then Wait for It!

There is nothing more powerful than making room for change and then waiting to see what shows up.  I eased up on my publication schedule and in the space that was cleared by that choice I continue to find new ideas and opportunities now that they have room to make themselves known.

How do you invite change in?  Sitting in silence with no expectation is a powerful place to begin.

***DEEPEN YOUR SPIRITUAL PRACTICE***

Deepen Your Spiritual Practice Through Art

We get so caught up in our words that we get tangled up in them and ultimately find we are limited by them.  Sometimes real clarity comes when we use art to explore our feelings, our thoughts, our inner world. What words cannot describe, drawing can.

I do pencil drawings of my journeys. Not all of them, but when I do take time to draw images from what I see, it clarifies and broadens my understanding of my journey.  And when I revisit the drawing, the whole journey pops back into my mind. I keep my drawings in sheet protectors in a binder.

You could use art to describe your feelings or to explore an idea for a project. My drawings have stick figures and signs that point to wavy lined paths.  When in doubt about what the image is meant to be, I add a label…! Drawing your idea provides a new way to look at it and explore its possibilities.

You could doodle or paint, cut out paper figures, use clay or finger painting or crayons.  Every color has a message, just choose colors that call to you and perhaps write words on your paper that pull up the images from your experience of the thought you want to capture.

Find other ways to explore your thoughts besides words. It will open up new depths of understanding.

***DEEPER SONG  INSIGHTS ***

The Question that Heals

“How are you doing?” my friend inquired in an email.  I sat down to answer her and uncovered insights and awareness that helped me heal myself. All because my friend knew I had had a rough time and cared enough to ask how I was doing.

When you listen, when you offer other people the gift of your caring presence, it opens up space for them to go within and find the core of their imbalance.  Through their self-awareness, self-healing occurs.

How are you doing? I’m listening.

Purpose and Intention versus Unfolding

The article said, “Begin the year with purpose and intention.” And it immediately felt forced to me.  I’m an unfolding kind of gal.  Now that doesn’t mean I don’t set objectives for myself, I do, but they are broad, not detailed and I’m just not very attached to them – I let them unfold. I go with the flow.  I’m pretty relaxed about when I do them or if I do them.  I tune in to what I am in the mood to do and then do that.

That’s pretty casual, right?  How do I get things done? I listen to my inner voice and respond in the moment.  And I am aware of the results of my choices and change those choices as seems appropriate.

Choose, act, evaluate.  Repeat. That’s how I let things unfold.

***OUR EVOLVING FUTURE***

What is Your Role?

I’ve been listing to a lot of classical music lately and it makes me think of the long path to becoming a professional musician.

There are very few solos in an orchestra. But the ones I have been hearing are heart-stirringly beautiful.  That means that person has spent hours and hours and hours learning to play that well.

What is your role?  Are you to be a core member of a group?  A soloist in an orchestra?  A performing artist in your own right?  Or do you just love to play music?  What is your role in life – soloist, conductor, member of the ensemble or a joyful player of music for yourself?  Whatever level you are, you bring with it joy, commitment and love of music.

Looking back over my life, I have been in ensemble groups that created an experience I could not have done alone – quartets, choirs, the cast of a play.  And I have worked diligently and consistently to hone my own individual skills.

But my role now is as a member of a much larger group –  the growing ensemble of conscious seekers who are working together to raise the  vibration of our planet.

This is a time of change.  Our role is changing.  The opportunities are changing.

Look back over your life for the signs and signals and the opportunities you did or did not take, and notice the choices that led you to where you are now.  You have the power to change direction by changing your choices.

I have spent a large portion of my life writing – both professionally and perennially.  What gift weaves its message throughout your life?

Know what is driving your life and your life choices. What is your role and how are you going to fulfill it?

Message from the Sacred Earth Cards

Revolution

I drew this card “Revolution” for myself this week and had to go to the oracle book that came with the cards in order to discover it is about cycles.  Revolving cycles. Expanding and waning cycles. We are always in some stage in multiple cycles.  They intertwine, and ebb and flow, and our life changes.  On the card, a woman is holding a lotus in a globe.  A lotus is rooted in mud below the surface, and its awesome flower rises to the surface to share its beauty with the world.  Be aware of the mud that nurtures you.  Be aware of the multiple cycles you are in and see if you can understand and take advantage of where you are in each cycle.

I am in a cycle that is changing my offerings.  It is affecting the frequency, the form, and what I write about.  I am in another cycle with my body – a sort of uncomfortable  straightening of my body as I release something I have not identified.  I am in a cycle of introspection, focused on raising my vibration and understanding my next steps. All three cycles are underway simultaneously.

Let your life unfold, but pay attention to the revolving stages of increase and decline in each cycle.  Allow yourself to evolve into the New Consciousness.

Follow Your Nudges

Amazing answers show up when you stay still and listen.

As suddenly as I got interested in Astrology, I am just as suddenly putting it aside. Or, at least not exploring it more deeply and giving it a lesser role in my own exploration. I have an over-arching intention.  I will follow that and it will show me what I need to do, what I need to consider next.

A shift happened when I was writing the opening article. The Deeper Song Process became a list of podcasts and posts that depend on the experience of the topic of the article, and I understood that is another way to help you explore more deeply, that it enriches what I offer.

I created a slightly different format for this newsletter and it is helping me focus on what I offer. It up-levels the content and helps me make more focused choices about what to include.

We are to go exploring more deeply together.  I have no real idea what that will look like, but I know I can go deeper and explore further afield and we will expand our consciousness together.

What I invite you to do is to follow your inner voice, your nudges, and explore what calls to you.  Be selective, be aware of what is calling you, and when you start exploring, notice how what you are learning and experiencing resonates.  Use your response to guide your steps.

We are taking a turn in the path here. We will end up in a new place, a new space of opportunity.  We just have to pay attention to the guideposts along our path – and choose each step with awareness.

My Three Words for2020 – Strength, Intention, Explore

My Three Words for2020  – Strength, Intention, Explore

Messages from the Unseen World

Choosing three words as guideposts for the year to come is a very powerful way to direct your journey and open your path. This idea comes from my friend Chris Brogan and I’ve been doing it since 2016.

How does choosing focus words impact your life?

Choosing focus words helps you set your direction for the coming year.  It’s like charting a course or at the very least knowing the general direction you want to go.

Choosing focus words helps you make conscious decisions. What is important to you? What do you want to bring next into your life? What steps are you willing to take to make it happen?  Where will those choices lead you?

My first word is “strength”

My first priority for this next decade is to strengthen my 87-yer-old body to help it regain its flexibility so I can keep living a proactive life.  “Strength” is the first world I chose.  It will be the cornerstone of my coming year.

Strength can also be a strength of purpose. Like getting projects out the door in a timely fashion.  Strength can mean determination to understand or learn or… My first cornerstone word for 2020 is “Strength.”

Intention is at the core of manifestation

Intention makes everything happen. It directs energy. It directs your thoughts. I will work to become more aware of the intention of erecting I think, and say, and do. And I will use the power of intention to help me explore the power of vibration and the Unseen World.

Intention is the second word I chose for 2020.

Change comes through exploration

“Explore” is my third word for 2020.  I am already exploring the Unseen World through shamanic journeying, but I recently experienced a powerful new message from my Inner World.  I now understand that the many crystals I have had around me for 40 years are to be my portals to the Unseen World. They are really talking to me in loud clear voices.  I will begin to journey with individual crystals with the intention of receiving their message from the Unseen World.  What an adventure!  I have no idea where I will go and what I will find.

“Explore” is the third word I chose for 2020.

Your words offer new awareness and open the door to new possibilities.

The three words you choose for this year will add power and direction to your chosen path.

What would you like the coming year to be like?  How would you like it to be different?  What doors would you like to open?  What wud you like to learn? What would you like to change?

What are your three words for 2020?

Deeper Song Affirmation

I choose three words to guide me on my path for the coming year.

My Three Words for 2019

January 2, 2019 By Cara Lumen

My Three Words for 2019
An Inner-world Exploration

We get to choose. We get to choose the direction we go in, the path we take, who we travel with and how we handle ourselves along the way. Our choice.  Our responsibility for the results.

One of the ways I focus my new year is to choose three guiding words.  What do I want to feel?  Experience?  Learn?  How do I want to change? For 2019, my three words are vibration, nature and portals.

Vibration

“If we learn to sense everything from a higher vantage point or vibrational frequency, we may actually see the world as it really is, a construct of our minds and our collective dance. Nothing is what it seems.” Raja Chaudhury

Learning to raise my vibration is the major focus of the coming year for me — learning to feel and sense and be vibration so I can experience and embrace our oneness.

You know, something simple like that.

In the past year, I have been consciously and actively exploring the 95% of our world that is invisible. How do you explore the invisible?  I do it through the inner meditative work of shamanic journeying.  I just go where I’m led.  I interpret the metaphors that appear and then I creatively apply the insights I receive.  Journeying in the invisible world is absolutely my favorite thing to do.

My focus for the new year is to deepen my inner work. A lot!

Nature

One of the key places to learn about vibration is in nature.  It’s filled with subtle messages and lessons.  Observing the seasons teaches me the patience of unfolding. Gradual and almost invisible growth in nature teaches me patience and appreciation for small changes. I learn about balance from the elements.  But most of all I learn about me because I am nature.  I’m an unfolding, ripening, living and dying energy of nature. I want to attune myself with nature.  I want to live an “unfolding life”.  I will create steps that help me become more aware of and feel closer to nature.

Portals

Rather than “portals” this word could have been “openings” or “doorways” or “sacred paths” but portal seems both important and inviting. Cross the portal.  Take a step through the portal and discover something new.  Portals mean adventure and continuous exploration.  I can do that.

My plan is to learn to raise my vibration so that I can explore the void and be open to entering and exploring any portal that calls to me. In my journeying, I’m getting very clear pictures of light streaming out of a portal, a doorway that I am to enter, an energy that’s within that calls to me.  The portal is always filled with a welcoming light, an invitation to enter, explore, figure out the message, the lesson, and how to apply it to my life. I’m excited about what I will find.

The year of 2019

It feels very adventurous, this new year of 2019.  Learning to raise my vibration, deepening my awareness of myself as nature, wandering off into the unseen world to move through mysterious portals, trying to figure out the meaning of what I find and bringing it back to apply to my life in a manner that changes my life and the lives of others who are drawn to my work.

That’s all…

How I will l access these concepts

First and foremost, I journey – every day. (See Unleash the power of your Sacred Garden) The more I journey, the more I’m shown and the better I get at interpreting the metaphors I’m given.

I seem to figure things out by writing about them. It may be a phrase that sparks a whole investigation of its meaning to me and ways I can apply it to my life.

I journal often and keep notes. I keep the entries organized by months and at the top of each month I create a summary that includes shifts, gifts, actions and purpose, so I can, if I wish, review the highlights.  I journal whatever stands out in my mind — how it felt, what it accomplished. Suddenly it’s easy to identify my next steps, the things that did work and also see where time was not so well spent so I can release and replace those. A journal is a powerful self-awareness tool.

I love to learn and take classes online all the time.  There are wonderful free summits on specific topics where you can meet potential teachers and of course find powerful in-depth courses to support you in your journey. The Shift Network and Sounds True are great sources.

My plans

I’m particularly excited about the vibrational work. I want to learn to experience myself as pure vibration. I want and need to experience my connection with the Transformational Thinkers who are all over the planet doing this inner work. It makes me feel stronger and more helpful. I don’t know what any of this will look like or feel like or even how I’m going to do it, but there are helping spirits ready to show me the way.

I continue to expand and strengthen my spiritual practice.  I’m in a constant state of exploration and discovery and adjustment as I strengthen and expand my daily spiritual practice, which includes many ways to reach and experience the unseen world.

Three years ago, my desire to deepen my relationship with nature led me to shamanism.  I have the tools, and I’m doing the work.  But I can do better and much of my focus in the coming year will be on merging with nature. I’ve begun to journey to the elements and seem to be writing poems again — which was always my way to grasp an insight.  I play my flute to begin my day and also to honor the sun going down.  I play my Kalimba Finger Piano to welcome the sunrise.  I will use sound and observation and ceremony to deepen my connection with nature.

I’m excited and eager to step through untried portals as I move more deeply into the invisible world.  I want to explore the 95% of the world that is unseen. An open door leads to adventure and deepening spirituality.  I want both.

What three words will you choose to guide your steps in 2019? And where will they take you?

It’s going to be a great year!!!!

Deeper Song Process

  • Write down the highlights of the past year
  • Highlight the satisfying experiences.
  • Identify the experiences that didn’t serve you.
  • What three words describe a focus that’ll move you forward in the coming year?
  • Choose those, record them in a journal and perhaps elaborate on how you might explore your choices.
  • Refer to your three words as the year progresses.

My Three Words for 2018

January 1, 2018 By Cara Lumen

What would you like the coming year to look like, feel like, be like? As our words create our life experience, the idea of choosing three words to focus on in the coming year is a very supportive process.

My three words for 2018 are:  “invisible”, “radiate”, “journey”.

Think about yours.

Invisible

I love the invisible realms.  Ninety-eight percent of our world is invisible, so finding ways to explore the unseen world is deeply enriching my life experience. I love the inner work I’m doing through shamanic journeying.  I love working with the elements and the helping spirits, and the guidance, insights, inspiration, and support I find in the inner realms.

Exploring the invisible realms is my focus for the coming year.  I’ll go adventuring, listening closely to what I uncover, and sharing what I discover with you in a way that excites and inspires you to try to deepen your own exploration of the invisible realms.

Radiate

Radiate is huge for me.  My way to participate in the healing and wholing of the world is to radiate light.  I simply sit and mindfully radiate my inner light, the light energy that I am, that you are.

Then I expand my light to join with other mindful light beings until we have covered the world in light and the layer begins to thicken and change our world. Radiating light is a daily part of my spiritual practice.  It’s not about focusing light. It’s about being light and simply radiating the vibration of light.

Journey

Shamanic journeying is at the core of my spiritual practice and my current form of meditation.  When I journey to the inner realms, I meet with helping spirits and receive guidance and insights.  I explore the past and the future.  I journey to heal myself and others.   As I use journeying to explore the invisible inner realms, I’m gaining a deeper understanding and connection with the All That is, The Great Mystery, the Nowhere That I Came From.

If I had a fourth word, it would be “bridge,” for my work is to be a bridge between this inner work I’m doing and you.  I am to explore, interpret and share.

It will be a quiet, inward-looking year.  Not just focused introspection, but exciting exploration in which I learn and discover and apply the wisdom of the unseen world as I steadily deepen my study and practice of shamanism.

How I’ll apply my three words

Introspection and an expanded spiritual practice that contains journeying are cornerstones of my inner work.  I journey every day.  Journeying is how I explore the invisible realms.  I’m taking more classes and reading more books on shamanism.   My core spiritual practice is to simply radiate light to the world with the intention of bringing us all into an awareness of our own light and of the fact that we’re all one radiant light energy, the same light. There is no separation.

And when we realize that, when we allow ourselves to feel that oneness, to be that oneness, we join with other lights, and then more lights, and more lights from all over the world.  And soon we have expanded not only our own spiritual hearts but the spiritual hearts of those who’ve also chosen to change the world by expanding their spiritual hearts and to add their light to the world-encompassing collective light body.

We will and do create change

Our world will change because of what we believe, what we think, what we do.  Consciousness will be raised, thoughtfulness will increase, we’ll experience ourselves as one light, one energy and make mindful choices for the highest good of all.

Light is who and what I am. Light is who and what you are.

Let’s radiate together!
