The Path We Choose
An Exploration of the Unseen World
We are responsible for the journey we take. We are responsible for the path we choose. We choose what we bring with us in our backpack and we are responsible for how willing we are to keep going.
Years ago, when I left the Mid-west to move to New York City, a friend gave me a copy of the Robert Frost Poem “The Road Less Traveled.” 50 years later it still hangs on my wall. It has lived on both coasts and is now back the Mid-West – a circuitous route, truly a road less traveled.
And I am forever grateful that I had the courage to take the Road Less Traveled.
We make our choices. We reap the response. With each choice, we learn how to choose better and we keep on going.
Where are you on your journey? What new options are you considering? Where are you headed?
I’m Cara Lumen, spiritual philosopher and founder of the Deeper Song Community. I am a cosmic explorer who consciously travels into the unseen world to serve as a bridge to help us expand our relationship with the spiritual world. I share what I learn and guide those who are ready to the next level so we can sing a deeper song. Thank you for being a part of this journey
In this episode of Reflections of a Deeper Song, we think about The Path We Choose.
This is a translation of a poem by Antonio Machado. When I first heard it I cried. It is called “Traveler.”
Traveler, your footsteps are the road
There is nothing more.
Traveler there is no road.
The road is made by walking.
Walking makes the road.
And if you turn around you only see the path you can never walk again.
Traveler, there is no road, only a trace of foam upon the sea
Let me read it again:
Traveler, your footsteps are the road
There is nothing more.
Traveler there is no road.
The road is made by walking.
Walking makes the road.
And if you turn around you only see the path you can never walk again.
Traveler, there is no road, only a trace of foam upon the sea
There is a sadness about never going back. There is a challenge in knowing your next step is creating your new path.
Let’s see hat we can learn from this poem:
What is our read made of? What choices have you made that brought you to where you are today?
How do we make our road? If each step is responsible for creating our path, how aware are you of the next step you are taking?
Finally, what are our choices about directing our path? How do we make them? How do we choose?
What is our read made of?
“Traveler, your footsteps are the road
There is nothing more.”
With each step, we create the path we take. Our choice directs were we go next. Now that is very important to know. That means that in every move we have choice . Choice to go one way or another, we get to take the path that goes up or the path that goes down or left or right or straight ahead.
With each step in each moment, we are creating our path. Each thought creates our next experience. We can control that. The deeper the awareness we have of our own heart, our own purpose, the more aligned is the step we take as we make our road one chosen step at a time.
Do we stand still on our road? If only footsteps make the road, then standing still to consider, to contemplate before we choose our next step is a good thing to do. But we don’t move forward until we take that next step. That next step creates our road.
How do we make our road?
We have created where we are stanging today through the choices we did or did not make. I am deeply aware that some of my choices were made with more awareness than others. And some steps were taken in response to an experience. We each create our own path by the choices we do or do not make. The steps we do or do not take.
“Traveler there is no road.
The road is made by walking.
Walking makes the road.”
If I stand here doing nothing, I am not traveling, I am not moving forward. “The road is made by walking.” So I have to take a step. I have to make a choice. I have to put one foot in front o the other and look to see where it has taken me. I have to see if it is aligned with my beliefs and if it is taking me where I want to go, to what I want to do.
I can only move forward by taking a step, and then another step and then another step. “Walking makes the road.”
We need to try, we need to explore, we need to experiment. We have to move forward in order to learn, to understand, to experience, and to absorb. That’s a lot from one step. But even one step provides us with a new view.
“Traveler there is no road.
The road is made by walking.
Walking makes the road.”
And we cannot walk the path again .”
There is no going back. What’s done is done. Learn from it, change from it, and build on what you learned – but you cannot go back and change it .
“And if you turn around you only see the path you can never walk again.
Traveler, there is no road, only a trace of foam upon the sea.”
How delicate is our journey. We have left ripples with our footsteps but those ripples are long gone. We have survived the high seas of our journey, the high tides, the low tides, but there are no traces of our path, our footsteps, our traveling though left to see. Only in your heart, only in your memory, only in your regrets only in your knowledge that you made good choices. You walked a strong path. And those steps of the past are not your next step. They are gone. Past moments in time that has dissolved.
It’s as if we are standing on a ledge of time with only a next step to take. We can choose a new direction. We can choose a big step or a small step, a hesitant step, or a bold one. We can go in one direction or the other. But the only way our road unfolds is if we take a step.
Here’s the Robert Frost that still hangs on my wall and live in my heart.
The Road Not Taken
BY ROBERT FROST
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Traveler, your footsteps are the road
There is nothing more.
Traveler there is no road.
The road is made by walking.
Walking makes the road.
And if you turn around you only see the path you can never walk again.
Traveler, there is no road, only a trace of foam upon the sea
