How Flexibility Impacts Change

March 10, 2015 By Cara Lumen

chance-change

Change is constant. Which means nothing today will be the same tomorrow. We have to develop ways to stay flexible in the midst of change.

Allow your life to flow

When you become more aware that life is a constant cycle of change you will not expect or desire to hold onto a particular moment. You will simply immerse yourself in the experience, absorb it and learn from it. Then you will let it go. When you go with the natural on-going flow of life, you enjoy the freedom of stopping to absorb a new idea, or the unexpected pleasure of a fresh insight. Stay fluid and flexible as you move through your life.

Act in unorthodox ways

Change comes from within you. Change is shaped by who you are. Change unfolds from what you believe is possible. Stretch yourself. Try an unusual approach. Raise your sights. Take another path. Expect more. The more unorthodox your action, the more aligned will be the change you make. Think far beyond the boundaries of the box you think you live in.

Abandon structured thinking

Preconceived ideas are like cages. They limit your imagination and your expectation. Avoid the structured thinking that preceded the circumstances. Disregard the dogma that inhibits expansive thinking. Fixed ideas are tricky. They are buried deep within. Some of them are from our childhood and are buried in our unconscious.

Approach the situation with a beginners mind, a curious mind, a creative mind. Poke it, prod it. Look at it from different angles before selecting your course of action.

What to do when a problem cannot be fixed

If you can find the cause of a problem, then correct it. If the problem cannot be corrected, then shift your entire frame of reference. This is a huge idea. When you shift your frame of reference, it will diminish or even eliminate the relative importance of the problem. For instance, I was doing a podcast. I couldn’t figure out how to attach the music intro to the edited file. It stopped me, until I decided to put up the podcast without the music so I could get on with the work. I can go back and figure it out, but for the moment, l diminished and eliminated the problem and moved forward.

Avoid fixed routines

Nothing keeps us from allowing change faster than a routine. Scramble your activities from time to time and discover new opportunities. Go to bed earlier and see what dawn looks and feels like. Walk a different route than you usually do. Eat when you are hungry rather than by the clock. Shake it up and allow a natural flow to emerge. When you are flexible throughout your day, you’ll find opportunities you didn’t expect.

Change with the flow

Life is constantly creative and persistently in flux. Every moment is different. Every breath is unique. Every experience is one of a kind. Learn to be flexible and change with the flow.
