How Cycles Sneak Up On You
An Inner-world Exploration
Look at your life. Are you happy or would you like things to be different?
You can’t make a change unless you know change is needed
The sneaky thing is that life moves in cycles – small increments that you barely notice. You gradually find yourself in a different position than you thought you were going and you don’t even know exactly how you got there. That’s why it’s important to take regular well-being checks – on all levels – emotional, spiritual and physical. Well-being – how well is your “being?“
You are the only one who can create change
No one else can make the desired changes for you. It’s up to you to identify what needs changing, figure out how you want to make the change and then do it.
It’s all on you.
Sure you can get some how-to help, but the doingis something only youare responsible for.
That can be a bit daunting.
If you are unhappy in a situation, figure out why
It took me a while to figure out that I was lonely. I had two people that I talked to on Zoom regularly, but there was still something missing and I had no idea what. And then the universe gave me a nudge – a third person to talk to regularly – about a different aspect of my life. It was perfect. My loneliness instantly dropped away. That unidentified need had been filled.
What is missing?
I have two friends who talk spiritual stuff with me but this new friend talks about practical business and life things. It filled a huge space I had not been nurturing since I had retired. I welcomed it.
You may have to look back over your life to identify moments that were meaningful to you. Identify why they were important or fulfilling, and then see how you can create something similar in the present moment.
What is crowding you?
Because I am 86 and tucked in, I have been offered and am experiencing the gift of total freedom to choose what I want to do each day. Yes, there are some physical limitations, but I basically have the freedom to choose to do whatever calls to me, particularly things I can create mentally.
We are often crowded by the needs of others – our family, our work, the choices we make. What if you were to begin with an empty slate? What, exactly would you put into your life?
Begin with a clear day and savor each action
If you can’t manage a full day of mindful awareness, manage a full hour. Stop and look within and see exactly what you need and want to do in the moment. That takes some self-awareness on your part. If you had this one hour to nurture yourself, what would you do? Sit in nature? Write a poem or a song? What do you do in order to hear the calling of your inner voice?
Look within – deeply
I was missing the interactive content development coaching I used to do and had no idea until I had an opportunity to focus on it again. I’m not restarting my business, but I now have occasional conversations about defining how one is expressing themselves in their business.
Cycles are sneaky. Something goes away and you adjust. Then something more goes away and you adjust again until suddenly you have a good-sized hole that used to contain things that nurtured you.
Sometimes the filling of the empty space looks different than what was there before. I no longer have clients but I have started a closed Facebook group for The Deeper Song Explorers in which I’m able to have conversations with and learn from and exchange with people who are walking along the path that I am on now. So the empty space that was created by stopping my business ten years ago, left a hole that I filled in various ways. First with all my writing and now with active interchanges with like-minded travelers.
You have to look closely for what has gradually disappeared from your life and take steps to mindfully fill that place with what is relevant to you now.
Know yourself
Understanding yourself, your values, your interests, your needs is the starting place for change. Study yourself carefully. Look deep inside and identify what you truly want and need and desire.
Then do that.
Deeper Song Affirmation
I pause now to identify what is missing from my life and take steps to wisely refill that space.
Deeper Song Process
- Make a list of two columns. On one side put what you love to do, what motivates and nurtures you. In the other column put in the things you are doing now in your life that you do not enjoy and may even resent.
- Grade them in some way – three stars, two stars – so you can identify the things you love to do and the things you definitely do NOT love to do.
- Pick one of the things that is not working in your life and write down three possible steps you can take to change them. Pick one step and do it.
- Pick one of the things that you love having in your life and write down three possible steps you can take to create more of that in your life. Pick one and do that.
- Repeat regularly until you have reached the balance in your life that you want.
