How Do You Express Your Spirituality?
Living Our Deeper Song
Spirituality involves a personal quest for meaning in life. It is a fluid and constantly evolving adventure. I’m the one around here who keeps having to say, “I am not Christian but I am very spiritual.” I have adapted a fairly broad range of spiritual philosophy and practices and have woven them into my unique spiritual practice.
We develop our spirituality as we explore and shape our lives. We add ceremony or a specific spiritual practice and experiment with ways to deepen our inner connection with spirit. We make our spiritual practice uniquely our own.
We find a ceremony or thought patterns that resonate with us and absorb our version of them into our own life. We keep exploring and experimenting as we find new ways to expand and deepen our spiritual way of living.
I found the philosophy of the Tao Te Chin about 40 years ago. I learned transcendental meditation in the 60’s. I learned mudras in yoga classes along the way. I first studied shamanism about ten years ago. Shamanic journeying is part of my spiritual practice. I like to journey to get guidance from my Inner Voice. My spiritual practice includes meditation and Qigong and drumming and singing and sound healing. Your spiritual practice can be eclectic and changing.

DEEPER SONG PROCESS
- Chose a new element to put into your spiritual practice.
- Rearrange the elements of your daily spiritual practice – the order or time of day or frequency or length. Experiment with one new element to see how it suits you. (I am creating a vision board and I have begun to weave working with that into my daily spiritual practice.)

Winter Solstice December 21
The Winter Solstice marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the winter hibernation. It is a time for reflection. How did you do? Perhaps make a list of your accomplishments and most importantly, how you feel about that. What did you learn? What new paths opened up for you?
This is a time for reflecting – for absorbing what you learned and giving thought to how it can change your life.
What do you want to learn? What do you want to explore?
I’m going to explore the possibilities of intelligence in outer space. I’m going to be more aware of how I can share my holistic knowledge with the western medicine staff around me. I will deepen my inner work around my role in the planet.
I will use the Winter Solstice for reflection, for recording ideas that I will examine in the Spring. The Winter Solstice is a time for replenishing, restoring, renewing, re-thinking and restoring inner balance. It is a good time for journalling and writing down insights and ideas that show up. You will make your selections for seed planting in the Spring. Winter Solstice is a time for deep reflection and inner work.
Did You Have The Wrong Parents?
The young woman told me her parents had never been able to care for her and she had ended up in foster care. I paused to look at my parents and what they each did or did not contribute to my life. I looked at my role as parent for my children and the granddaughter I raised.
There are so many nuances in parenting and in growing up. We must be both forgiving and accepting as we review our relationships as a child, as a sibling and as a parent. To each stage we bring a different awareness, different needs and different responses. And all of those experiences will affect those with whom we come in contact. We must be forgiving of ourselves and those with whom we interacted and know that we did not know what was going on with the other person.
Forgive yourself. Forgive those you feel hurt you. Look at those moments as important lessons that you both needed to have and build on the experience.
Dancing To Better Health
I have a new self-designed exercise program built around moving to music. I have had a great time exploring songs I have enjoyed through the years. I keep a list of the links and I organically create my Moving To Music exercise program. It doesn’t have to be very fast. You can mindfully stretch to slower music, stand up tall, move into a faster beat, turn from side to side – whatever your body is willing to do. How will you add moving to music to your life?
Accept The Need To Change
I have a big confrontation that I must handle and I don’t know how. I am in a therapy group with three other people and a therapist. For the most part, I find it interesting and I am grateful for the friends. It turns out that I am good at asking leading questions. But one member epitomizes the reason I do not choose to socialize with old people as a rule. She only talks about herself and her memories. There is no moving forward for her. My irritation is so great that I know it shows on my face and I am having a very hard time controlling it. So the Universe is giving me an opportunity to heal and I don’t want it.
I have to change. I have to find a way to be around her. She has a reputation for going on and on about her own story so it’s up to me to figure out what to do about it. It is such a major plug-in for me that I have no idea how I will handle.
What do you do where there a major plug-in that you have no idea how to handle?
What Excites You?
I have to look hard to find a time when I was excited. I was excited about my major moves to New York and California. I get excited when I get to learn something new. I’m excited about moving to music every day. But I can’t think of many times in my life that I was excited. How about you? What excites you and do you savor the moment?
Take Time To Appreciate
I want to take more time to appreciate things in my day. I sit by a big window and can easily turn and look at nature. I have interesting exchanges throughout my day. I learn something every day. But I would like to be more appreciative of where I am and what I have been given at this point in my life.
Do you notice the gifts the Universe bestows on you? Do you take time to savor and appreciate them? Do you thank those around you for their friendship? I, for one, am going to start doing a better job of appreciating and acknowledging the gifts I am given.
The Day Looms Large
The day looms large. How do I want to shape it? How do I want to fill it?
The day looms large. How do I want to shape it? How do I want to fill it? I want to learn something new. I want to grow inside. I want to feel productive. This day is bursting with possibilities.
The day looms large. How do I want to shape it? How do I want to fill it? I want to learn something new. I want to grow inside. I want to feel productive. This day is bursting with possibilities. I sit in silence and contemplate my many options. I’m going to make it a great day.

A Quiet Mind
I sit in the sun and quiet my mind.
I sit in the sun and quiet my mind. I withdraw from the world and feel peaceful.
I sit in the sun and quiet my mind. I withdraw from the world and feel peaceful. I release my humanness and disappear into the moment,
deep into my inside world.

We Create Our Own Path
I made the choice to live alone in the 80’s – when I was in my 50’s – except for the years I spent raising my granddaughter – and it has a been a conscious choice. I need a bit more physical support now but it is generously provided here at Evergreen. How will you handle aging alone?
More and more young people are choosing not to have families, so aging alone is an aspect around which we must be creative.
In the US we have Social Security. We each need to research what that means for us. We are not building enough long-term care facilities. The aging population is expanding rapidly and subsidized housing is not keeping up. Educate yourself on your options. Begin to design your elder years.
Evergreen has the best reputation in Kansas and Missouri as a long-term care facility. Others come here to see how we do it. Explore your options and get on a waiting list. There was a three-year waiting list in the subsidized independent living that I lived in before here. Do your research before you need it. Take charge of your aging process long before you need the help. We create our own path. How will you take charge of yours?

The Choices Are Mine To Make
I can be prepared or I can be surprised. I can explore and deliberate and make a conscious choice.
I can be prepared or I can be surprised. I can explore and deliberate and make a conscious choice. None of us know what our “next” is but we must understand our options and our choices before we actually need them.
I can be prepared or I can be surprised. I can explore and deliberate and make a conscious choice. None of us know what our “next” is but we must understand our options and our choices before we actually need them. After that, all we need to do when it is time is to make the change and do that.
