What Makes A Friend A Friend?

What Makes A Friend A Friend?

Living Our Deeper Song

Ashe
(“Ah-Shay”)
 The Creative in me honors the Creative in you!

I was thinking back over the friends I have had in my lifetime. I aways seemed to have at least one close friend – that person who shares your values, who for the moment is going in a similar direction to yours and someone with whom you shared equally.

Pause a minute and think back – perhaps clear to your school days and feel a smile of remembrance come to your face.

Friends care about each other. They care for each other. And the friendship is never forgotten. You come together for a moment in time for a shared interest in which you both teach and learn from each other.

A friendship develops organically.  It may last only as long as a mutual interest or project. But it enriches both of you.

Friendships are never lopsided. Each person receives the gift of being and having a friend.  You are each filling a specific need for the other at the same time.

I have no idea where some of my past friends are, or how their lives turned out but they were important allies and support for me at various points in time.

I have been in long-term care for three months and I continue to deepen my friendships among the staff. Part of that comes from my open friendliness and part of that comes as they get to know me and respond. There is the Med Aide who took me outside after she heard I had asked to be taken out the day before. She is the same one who helped me find and fasten fake flowers to my wheelchair. Their willingness to help me with my most mundane tasks is touching.

I’m getting to know people better as we deepen our exchanges.

I am drawn to anther Med Aide because of how well and cheerfully she does her job.  Staff comes to me to talk about crystals and meditation and the dreamcatchers in my window. A few are reading my newsletter and looking over my website.

There are a lot of young people 19 and 20 who have already chosen this path of service and it is fascinating to get to know someone so aligned with their gifts so early in their life.

My close friends are all at least 30 years younger than I. I do not relate to people my age, only to the younger people who are still active in their lives.

What kind of a friend am I? I started to write that I was not physically supportive of others at 90 but I am – I am mentally supportive to a lot of people.  I think I am entertaining in my uniqueness.

Cultivate your friends.  I have Zoom calls with friends in Europe as well as the States.  We are interesting, interested women living active lives and supporting and encouraging each other.

Is there an old friend you want to call?  Is there a new friend you want to know better? And while you are at it, what kind of a friend are you?

DEEPER SONG AFFIRMATION

I develop new ways to deepen my friendships.

DEEPER SONG PROCESS

===INNER WORK===

Deepen Your Inner Awareness

Dismemberment And Today’s World

There is great hope in Sandra Ingerman’s February Transformational News. Just read it….

Fresh Start

Would you like to take a pause in your life and create a clean slate upon which to write the next stage of your life? What would you erase? What would you write that is new? What would you embellish? It could be a relationship, it could be a job, it could be a situation. If you could take a pause and clear out some of your emotional space what would you release?

Go within to a quiet space and picture your life without that element. Without that conflict. Without that obligation. See what your life would be like. When you have decided what you would like to change perhaps go even deeper within and ask your inner self how to make that happen. How are you planning to make that change? How do you release a situation so that you can move on? Play with various scenarios, make some decisions and do the work. Keep exploring and create a fresh start.

Affirmations

An affirmation is a positive statement made as if it has already happened. “All of life comes to me with ease and joy and glory.” “I master this information easily and effortlessly.” “I easily recognize the right direction for my next step.” All of those are affirmations that help us manifest the specifics of our life. Notice the affirmations you are giving yourself almost unconsciously and be certain they are what you want to manifest.

You might be saying things like “I can’t do that”, or “it’s too hard“ or “that will never happen.” Change those affirmations into “I find a solution easily and effortlessly.”

Notice the messages you give yourself and do some course correction today.

===SELF-HEALING===

Take Responsibility for Healing Yourself

The Silence of Change

You cannot see a leaf grow. You cannot hear a bud unfold. You cannot hear the flutter of a butterfly wing. And you cannot hear your own body healing itself and manifesting change.

These are all silent worlds that manifest continuous change. Scientists have learned to look closely at microscopic levels to understand the myriad of detailed interactions that are involved in our body. They can even fix many things when they go wrong.

Change is often silent. We have to learn to do the work and watch for the subtle shifts that manifest because of what we are doing.

As I watch my body heal some of the changes are very small and some are fairly dramatic. I keep listening deeply to interpret the subtle messages and positive change it is accomplishing.

A great deal of change is silent. Learn to listen with your whole being.

===OUTER  WORK===

Explore New Potential and Possibilities

The Younger Generation

I met a remarkable young woman one night who was on duty from the agency. Her name is Sophia and she is going to be a gynecological surgeon. She is 19. And she has known since she was five that was what she wanted to do. She has a full-time job at KU Medical Center but takes temp assignments when she is bored.

As I get to know these younger people, I am beginning to get a glimpse of how the world will evolve under their guidance.

As old people we have to trust the unfolding, that they are learning what is needed for the well-being of the world today and are stepping forth to make it possible. As a member of the really old generation, I realize that our way is no longer useful. We are probably outdated and out of touch. I wish the older politicians would figure that out.

Be open to experiencing younger people and their unique point of view and let it help expand how you see the world.

Do Something Differently

I’m not suggesting you eat your dessert first but I am suggesting you rearrange how you do what you do. I try to do things differently as I explore a new experience. My spiritual practice is changing because I can’t play my native flute very well anymore because of my arthritic fingers so I’m turning to my drums to expand my spiritual practice. I’ve begun to use more protective energy elements around me in the form of protective shields. And I really like the idea of being at the altar of infinite potentials, so that when we change our energy, we change our lives. I want to explore that more and feel what it creates for me.  Maybe you try a new game or read a new book or explore a new podcast. Do something to change your routine and your viewpoint.

Rethink The Premise

I had asked to hang my drums on the wall until Andy from maintenance came and talked to me about it and I realized it was not a good idea. He suggested I move them into a container near my desk. It was a great idea because I realized that if they were closer, I would play them more often. Sometimes we have ideas that are not as practical as they could be and we get to rethink them.

Positioning is super important. I won’t play my drums if they are across the room on the wall but I will play them if they’re right here by my desk so I can turn and look out the window and play a few rhythms. But I hadn’t realized that.

Explore a problem from several angles before you settle on a choice. It could be from the aspect of keeping things together, from splitting them up, where you place them or from simply getting another container. Rethink how you have the things around you and see if you can make them more assessable.

Taking Stock

We must pause periodically in our life and our work to take stock,  to see what has changed. To see what we have learned. To see what new choices have opened up and what we have accomplished.

Once we make that evaluation, and gain that overview, we can make new choices based on the progress we’ve made and the new opportunities that have opened up.

It’s easy to get caught up in detail and forget to pause to examine your progress. You don’t have to rethink things every day but you should rethink them frequently because as you take new steps, new insights and avenues open up to be considered.

You may find you don’t want to continue a project. You may find a new way to do it to help make it happen faster. As you move along a project, question your process and progress many times along the path. Make room for experiments and change and growth, deeper understanding and greater insights.

===DEEPEN YOUR SPIRITUAL PRACTICE===

Self-Healing Spiritual Practice and Deepening Awareness of Our Cosmic Oneness

I’m Really Into The Frame Drum

One of the earliest forms of drums is the frame drum. The women were denied access to drums so they used their grain sieves as drums. And that was the beginning of the frame drum. I seem to be using my frame drum several times a day. I actually put my cheek on it and feel the vibration go into my body as I drum. And then I let my body talk. I let me talk to me through the drum. It is a new language I am learning.

The frame drum I have is a 16” REMO Fiberskyn – $30 on West Music: Buy Here

There’s a new thumb drum class on The Shift Network but I took one from Christine Stevens a few years ago. Here’s the new class: Rhythms and Myths of the Sacred Frame Drum

===HOW TO BE A STRONG CONTRIBUTING MEMBER OF THE CIRCLE OF LIGHT BEARERS===

Expand Your Role in the Rapidly Evolving Universe

Change With The Times

I watched my physical therapist use his thumbs to rapidly text a message and realized that I can’t do that. I’m from the days of the keyboard and I leaned to type on a big manual typewriter.

I read an article about how artificial intelligence is replacing white-collar workers and wondered what people were going to do for jobs under those circumstances. Those are not the issues of my generation but they may very well be the issues of yours.

One of the questions I have about artificial intelligence is how does morality and spirituality get built into it and by whom. My friend Thuy knows how to teach this and I’m having fascinating conversations with her about it. It’s not that I’m trying to abandon a roll of responsibility but I am not in a position to make those kinds of changes in the world. Perhaps you are. Perhaps you will. Perhaps you do.

===BROADEN YOUR HORIZON – EXPAND YOUR VIEW===

Raise Your Sights and Your Expectations

Combine Your Gifts and Talents Into A New Offering

I have had several professions in my lifetime and I’m now taking great pleasure combining them into unique offerings. I no longer teach Reiki but I use it in my daily life. I only occasionally write professionally but I use my writing all the time to explore the world in this newsletter and share what I discover. I was a licensed spiritual practitioner in the Center for Spiritual Living and that has permeated my daily philosophy of life as has my immersion in Taoism and Shamanism.

As we add new skills and awareness to our life, we adapt and incorporate them into our offerings.

I have a good friend who’s ready to retire and is changing professions.  She is combining Reiki and Shamanism in the astrology sessions she offers. How will you combine your gifts and talents into a new offering?

===OUR EVOLVING FUTURE===

Support and Encouragement for our Unfolding Role in the Future

Banishing Evil From Our World

Why is it that evil is so blatantly on display in our world today? Is it to make us aware of it? Is it to make us take active steps to eliminate it?

There have been other times in history in which evil came to the forefront and was prevalent in society. The world wars come to mind but today we see evil coming out of individuals in national and local arenas. Where is this evil coming from? Why is it manifesting? What are we to do?

As with almost any change we begin with our own self. Are you thinking thoughts of anger or hatred and revenge? Why? Are you making room for different viewpoints and different cultures? Why do you think that your way is the only right way?

Make room for the myriad of spiritual approaches in the world and see us all as light workers for the highest good.

Next Steps

Each day my body gets better and stronger as I recuperate from my hip replacement surgery. And that means that each day, I get to do a little more and ask a little more of myself. I have to do the work. A great deal of what I feel is joy and excitement over regaining my freedom of movement. I’m not sure I ask as much as I could or should but then I’ve never been one to challenge myself physically.

My body and I are a team working to regain my strength and my stamina. It heals and I give it more opportunity to strengthen. It is definitely a collaborative effort.

What kind of conversations do you have with your body? Are you aware when it sends out signals did it need something different or more? It could ask for a different diet. It could ask for more movement. Pay attention and give your body what it needs.

Because I get so engrossed in my writing and unconsciously lean forward into my computer, I am now resorting to my ladybug timer and set it for 20 minutes. When it goes off, I lean back in my chair and look out the window and take a few deep breaths and change the rhythm of my focused concentration. I could use the timer to remind me to stand up from my desk and stretch my body and move my legs and quiet my mind.

How in tune are you with your body? Do you listen to it throughout your day? Do you respond to its needs effectively? Even stopping your mental focus to turn and gaze out at nature and take some centering breaths will help change the intensity of your focus and let your body restore itself to its natural rhythm.

Your body is there for you but it is a partnership. Do your part through the choices you make.

My body has given me a long and interesting life and I am grateful.

My body has given me a long and interesting life and I am grateful. It is older now and needs more care which I thoughtfully and gratefully provide.

Vision Our World Into Being

Living Our Deeper Song

Ashe

(“Ah-Shay”)

The Creative in me honors the Creative in you!

The Mookaitite Jasper crystal tower I held in my left hand clearly said to me, “Dream your future into being.” If this is a dismemberment we are going through in our world today, we get to put together a whole New World unlike anything we have ever experienced before.

Right off the bat I see everything with solar power. There are ways to clear up the plastic waste in the ocean. There are new discoveries in healing every day. What if we just suddenly have this whole new world in place, a new way of doing things, a new way of interacting with each other? No harm to anyone. No harm to anything. Peaceful coexistence. Can we even imagine that? What if we fill every interaction with love and compassion? What if negativity simply dissolves and disappears. Each day is filled with inclusiveness and kindness. We care for each other. We care about each other. All species live in cooperation.

What qualities will you put into this world that we can vision into being together? Begin living that way now.

We must move our gaze. We must look for higher expressions of oneness and place them in our lives. Not only do we have to change what we look for, we have to change how we express ourselves. That means we have to cease being critical and find ways to feel compassionate and inclusive instead. That means we have to notice the small acts of kindness and compassion and moved to incorporate them into our own life expression and look for signs of inclusive self-expression in ourselves and in others. Change what you look for. Raise your gaze and focus on our oneness.

DEEPER SONG AFFIRMATION

I focus on the positive kindness I see today and help it manifest more.

DEEPER SONG PROCESS

  • Shift your gaze from what is not working and focus on the acts of kindness and inclusiveness that are emerging.
  • Contribute to that unfolding.

===INNER WORK===

Deepen our Inner Awareness

Downsizing to Redefine Your “Next”

There’s nothing like downsizing to make you redefine your intentions and your direction and your purpose in life. That’s a lot to accomplish by releasing a few possessions. “Is what I’m keeping talking to my heart?” is now the best decision-maker I’ve ever created.

I’ve had to re-define my computer space with a smaller desk but I chose one that goes up instead of out. I am releasing crystals to go to new homes. But I’m talking to each one to make certain it’s ready to go. And I am definitely redefining what I get to keep and where I get to put it. Downsizing makes you keep around you what is important for this next phase of your life. This next step.

Perhaps you create change simply by rearranging what you are keep close at hand. For instance, I have four or five crystals that I want to be able to sit and hold and be with throughout my day. The table beside my main chair is getting pretty crowded. I can’t keep all my drums so I have to play them and bless them and let them go at some point before I move. Most of all downsizing makes you rethink what is truly important to you. In Feng Shui they start with empty space and very carefully choose each item that goes in. There are never very many items in a Feng Shui arrangement. It’s a good lesson. When you start to rearrange your altar or table or your desk, clear it off, put one thing back on at a time and feel how the energy changes. Visualize how you use the space and what you can do without. Releasing is at the core of downsizing. What can you let go of that would leave more space to move in, to be in and grow in?

===SELF-HEALING===

Take Responsibility for Self-Healing

Change the Energy of Your Home

As I begin to downsize my possessions, the energy of my home is also beginning to change. It’s as simple as putting a crystal in a different place. Or moving a chair or giving a few things away. What simple fundamental things can you do in your environment that will change the energy? It may be as simple as a new plant or moving one that you have. It probably is about letting things go. See what you can do to change the energy of your space and enjoy the results.

===OUTER WORK===

Exploration of New Potential and Possibilities

Choose to Create Balance

My day is not in balance. I need to make some adjustments. There are things I need to do less of that would allow me to savor other things more deeply. How are you doing on your allocation of time? What do you consider a poor use of your time? Spider solitaire falls into that category for me. Listening to too much news could also be on that list. So I am beginning to free up chunks of my day and exploring the possibilities I could explore. What do I want to put there? Do I go sit in the sun? Do I make up a poem? What would you do if you suddenly had a chunk of free time that you could fill any way that you wanted to? Do that.

Double Duty

As I continue to downsize, a major thing I get to work on is how one thing can serve two purposes. Perhaps three purposes, it’s a very small space and I have no idea when I will move, it could be a year, there are five people ahead of me on the waiting list so meanwhile I’m practicing. I’m working with less. I’m doing more with it. I’m finding alternate ways to do something. This is a period of exploration and experimentation and I’m still sitting in the home that I’ve been in for 12 years. Work with what you have and perhaps work with less of what you keep around you and see how that frees up your energy and focus.

===DEEPEN YOUR SPIRITUAL PRACTICE===

Self-Healing Spiritual Practice and Deepening Awareness of Our Cosmic Oneness

Create and Adjust

In your spiritual practice what is the most important aspect? Do you play instruments to nature? Do you meditate? Do you do affirmations? Notice which facets of your spiritual practice nurture you more than others and adjust the time you spend doing them. And then go exploring to find other forms of meditation. I have music in my spiritual practice. I consider learning and practicing Qigong part of my spiritual practice. I make up songs and there are rattles and bells and crystals on my altar as part of my spiritual practice. Even if you find something you really, really like, it doesn’t mean you can’t go exploring and find a new place and time to add it to your spiritual practice.

You may find that your spiritual practice changes with the seasons. Or with the time of day. See what new form of spiritual practice you can explore and adapt and absorb into your spiritual practice. Explore, experiment, and change.

===HOW TO BE A STRONG CONTRIBUTING MEMBER OF THE DIVERSE CIRCLE OF LIGHT BEINGS===

Expand Our Role in the Rapidly Evolving Universe

Our Role as Light Bearers

One of the ways Light Bearers are in service is by simply living their life in light. As we do, others see that same potential in themselves.

For instance, Corry, the Social Services Director here has offered help in such a loving compassionate manner that it was beautiful to experience. I commented on it and she told me she was very Christian-based and I told her I was very wu-wu. We laughed at how the compassion and caring was there for both of us. Shine your light. Others will recognize it in you and in themselves

===BROADEN YOUR HORIZON – EXPAND YOUR VIEW===

Raise Your Sights and Your Expectations

Explore The Unknown

Explore the unknown and try it on for size. I had quite a few responses from readers of this newsletter saying how much this conversation about changing and retiring and getting old is resonating with them and their concerns and uncertainties. I’m going to keep sharing this part of my journey because I can share the challenges that I have faced and the lessons that I learn. I’ve had my moments of being unhappy. Note that I was a theater major so they expressed themselves fairly dramatically for me. But I’m changing and rearranging things already in preparation – both physically and mentally. For instance, I’m going to begin listening to more podcasts. Depending on where the garden is from my room, I will go spend more time there and take my flute and play to the flowers. And surprise my neighbors.

I have a funny thing about my flute playing. My arthritis fingers are curved on the last joint so when I press what I think is straight down sometimes the sound is weird because the tips of my fingers are not covering the holes correctly. So maybe I won’t play to the flowers, I’ll just keep that to myself inside. But I can take my Kalimba, the flowers would like that.

I am grateful that I have time to downsize and practice living with fewer things so the change will not be as dramatic as it could be. And the timing is unknown.

What change do you see in your future that you could begin practicing for by trying it on for size and making adjustments to accommodate its unfolding and form? Go exploring and see what creative ways you can find to live your “next”.

===OUR EVOLVING FUTURE===

Support and Encouragement for our Unfolding Role in the Future

Change Is Always a Lesson

As I continue to downsize in preparation for a move into Assisted Living, I continue to get lesson after lesson about what is truly important to me at this point in my life. This move is requiring a lot of releasing of possessions. Is it time for you to re-focus on what is core to you? How many of your possessions would you release? You might consider that.

The Republicans put the abortion law into the primary in a very confusing language so we all had to learn how to turn down the amendment. Hopefully our state is a sign of things to come.

Akashic Records

I am going to listen to more podcasts, beginning with this one – Sounds True wrote:

“In every moment, you are receiving divine messages to help you align with your soul’s path—a path of spiritual evolution, soulful meaning, and universal love. These messages originate from the vast metaphysical library of your entire soul journey known as the Akashic Records.

Ashley Wood is an author, teacher, and co-creator of A Line Within, a platform dedicated to supporting others in using their Akashic Records for self-understanding and growth. Ashley also hosts The Line Podcast, a weekly show where she shares channeled teachings and tools for living in alignment with your soul. In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Ashley joins Sounds True founder Tami Simon to talk about her new book with Sounds True, The Line: A New Way of Living with the Wisdom of Your Akashic Records. Tune in as they discuss:

  • The prayer or “sound code” required for entering the Records
  • The Pleiadian energies known as the Pinnacle
  • Becoming an open conduit for your soul’s wisdom
  • The Line: an energetic, intuitive frequency that we all hold within us
  • The connection between intuition and your Akashic Records
  • Activating your awareness of your own Line
  • The crown of the head and the bottom of the feet as the bridge between our energetic selves and our physical selves
  • How to distinguish between discursive thinking and Akashic information
  • How the feeling of alignment is uniquely personal
  • Why “the most important thing we can learn in this physical life is how to show ourselves unconditional love”
  • The evolutionary and revolutionary changes unfolding in our current times and the call to serve through offering your gifts

As Ashley explains to Tami, “You’re receiving guidance all the time. It’s just about being open, patient, trusting, receptive, and following what you have planned for yourself in this life… If this is your first time hearing the language of your soul and really feeling comfortable with that, it will take time and practice and dedication. But in time you will get it.”

We hope today’s podcast opens you to a deeper understanding of your soul and your own sacred path.

With you on the journey,

Your friends at Sounds True

===CARA’S CORNER===

Embrace Creative and Innovative Change

My life has gotten smaller over the years as part of my aging and downsizing process. Releasing my wonderful ’83 turquoise Honda Civic with not many miles on it that got 30 miles to the gallon was a huge change and the young woman who bought her is loving having her in her life.

I’m very content with my online life and the friends that I’ve made there that are like-minded. This upcoming change into a smaller space in assisted living is going to take some getting used to. I will probably eat better because they will bring me meals or I can go eat with others. I can get my haircut which would be a good thing. I’m a little like Rapunzel at this point.

There are important fundamental things I can’t do anymore – like taking my trash out on a walker let alone tossing it in the high trash bin. Have you ever tried to balance a trash bag on the walker and then walk?

I will probably see more people in assisted living than I do here because of the people who will bring me my food if I want and do my laundry and help me sort out my vitamins. But it’s a big step in my aging process. And I’m working to make peace with it.

So I’m moving into another season of letting go which I think is what progress is all about anyway. I need to choose what is most valuable to have around me at this point in time. And let the rest go. This aging process is a path of releasing and completion. I want and need to turn this move into a new path of potential. I don’t yet know what that’s going to look like. But it will evolve as I open myself to new experiences and new opportunities. The rooms look out on a large garden tended by master gardeners so I can watch nature’s ever-present journey.

We are thinking up, not out in filling my smaller space. I am taking my computer on a new narrower stand and an elongated bookcase as my “officer” and my daughter is arranging for me to have an automatic lounge chair that pushes me upright and also leans back so I can sleep in my chair. A twin bed is provided as is a low four-drawer dresser to put your TV screen on. I’ve ordered a royal blue headset!! This is being provided me because I am on Medicare so it’s a semi-private room, I have to trust the Universe to provide the right suite-mate. There are people to help me with everything, day and night. But I’m a loner who loves being free to pursue my own calling. My spiritual exploring and my writing and online outreach are at the core. So perhaps the change is only in the size of the room. And the help in the responsibility of self-care.

What can I do at this point in my life that will be more productive and more impactful for those I serve? I stay open and listen and respond.

Magic is Simply a Change in Consciousness

July 18, 2017 By Cara Lumen

fairy sprinkling

Have you ever wished you had a magic wand you could wave to make something change or disappear? What if it was as simple as making a change in you?  That would make magicians of all of us.

The power in a shift in consciousness

You instantly become happy when you stop being angry.  You instantly stop pulling when you let go.  When you look for the positive, you no longer see the negative.  Yes, magic is all up to you.

Magic happens when you shift your consciousness

Let’s consider heavy duty things like judgement and negativity and anger and stubbornness.  Feel the energy of those emotions for a moment.  Now exchange those for acceptance, positivity, joy and inclusion.  Can you feel the difference in the way you feel? Magic?  Yes.  And you did it to yourself – all by yourself.

Magic and a change in circumstance

Everything that happens to us is a gift.  Although it may not seem like it at the time, it is a gift – of a lesson, a change in direction, an insight, an awareness –  even when we’re reluctant to accept it.

When you learn to simply let life unfold, you’re no longer attached to a particular outcome and are more flexibly receptive to what shows up.

Remember, sometimes things don’t manifest because it’s not time for them or because something better is on its way. It’s not really a roadblock, it’s a pause to reflect and allow circumstances to unfold.

Magic is in new insight

You know those moments when something suddenly becomes clear?  That’s magic. Magic happens when you get the “ah-ha” that identifies the best pathway forward. It’s in the new opportunity that unexpectedly presents itself. Magic is in the ceasing of all effort. It’s in acceptance.  And expectation.  Magic comes from you.

Your consciousness can eliminate worry and fear

When you deepen your spiritual connection, you increase your trust – trust in your safety, your well-being, your next steps.  Tension leaves your body.  You sit there in stillness, listening to your inner wisdom and knowing that the perfect next steps will appear.  That’s pretty magical.

Let go. Trust. Expect. Interpret.

What kind of a wizard are you?

Now that you realize you have this unstoppable power to shift your consciousness, what are you going to look for, focus on?  Perhaps you start looking for only good in others.  Perhaps you quieten your mind and allow your inner knowing to direct you.  Perhaps you observe more, listen more, allow life to unfold, and then respond from the depths of your inner self.

Magic is simply a change in your consciousness.  What kind of magic will you create today?

What Do you Need to Leave Behind?

May 9, 2017 By Cara Lumen

feather

In order to bring something new into our life, we have to let something we’re holding on to go. If things are not flowing into your life as easily and rapidly as you desire, perhaps you should look at what you need to leave behind?

Explorers travel lightly

Backpackers pack efficiently because they know they have to carry the full weight of whatever they take with them. They make things do double duty. They re-use things. They choose the few vital things like a compass and a knife and a canteen and a sleeping bag and carefully select and add one thing at a time, noticing the weight and the time it takes to put it into action. They leave a lot of things behind.

Since life is constantly changing and we are on a continuous adventure of exploration, we should learn to travel lightly.

Chuck the outmoded beliefs

Begin by looking closely at what you think can happen. If those beliefs are not big enough they can keep you from seeking, considering, choosing and expanding the new choices.

For instance, as I grow older, some physical things look and feel a little harder. So I simply make physical adjustments in how I participate. However, I never let physical restrictions stop me from taking part in some manner. I can participate, but I have to make room to explore the possibilities of how.

What do you need to leave behind to have time for the new vision?

Life is a series of choices. If I want to do one thing, I may have to do less of some other thing.

We change and our needs and desires change. Look closely at what is calling to you and make time for what resonates the most.

Honor your own process. I like to immerse myself in a project, so setting aside ten days to focus on one aspect or one project suits my personal rhythm and my learning style. I also like to create more than complete, so I have added a “Completion Day” in which I get things out the door.

How do you like to work?  And what do you need to make that happen?  Take only those actions on your journey forward.

Who do you need to leave behind?

Take stock of the energy exchanges between you and your friends. Is it balanced? Has a friend grown too needy, too demanding?  You always have a choice. Make room for supportive, nurturing empowering people in your life. Let the others go.

I love to learn but I’m realistic about how much I can absorb at one time and how much time I’m willing to spend on a specific class. I choose the best and most productive and most enjoyable use of my time and leave other opportunities behind.

Be prepared to cross a new threshold

Where are you going next and what do you need to take with you? What do you need to leave behind?  You don’t pack snow boots when you are going to the tropics. You may need to leave some habits behind. You may need to find new, more streamlined versions of something that nurtures. Where are you going, and what are the most supportive ideas and relationships you need to take with you?

As I explore subtle group energy work in many forms, I have to make some choices. I take parts of what I’m learning and creatively adapt what I keep into practices that fit my personal purpose, my physical energy and my time. I don’t know exactly where I’m going or what will be required but I’m definitely leaving space to explore what shows up.

As new doorways open, new opportunities appear

What happens if you lay every thing down that you’re carrying around and step through the new door with just you and an open mind?  Trust that whatever is needed will be provided. When you leave the “old” behind, you have room to embrace and explore the new. You are free and open to the new experience. You let the experience shape you.

As you end each day, lay down all your burdens, beliefs, and expectations.

As you begin each day, pick up only the tools you need for that day. You will become more productive and more joyous in moving through the opportunities you’re now free to explore.

What do you need to leave behind?  Will you let go so you can move on?

Are You Drowning in Too Much Stuff?

July 23, 2010 By Cara Lumen

by Cara Lumen

I read a blog post recently that suggested putting everything in your office (or whatever room you need to de-clutter) into boxes so that all the surfaces are clear of stuff. When you want something you get it out and put it where it belongs –the book on the bookshelf, the stapler in a reachable place or your contact information nearby. And after awhile you end up with what you need and use handy and a lot of stuff in boxes that you really do not need – so you can toss it!

Put stuff away

Pick a morning when you are fresh and rethink what you have out on the surfaces around you. I’m going to move to a smaller space and I already know I have too many put-abouts. So I’m giving some away and I’m still clinging to others. My day of reckoning is coming.

Clutter to the eyes is clutter to the brain. Think Zen gardens. Think an item of beauty surrounded by space. Think serenity. Think a featured item that catches your eye and rewards it. Because I have so many items that I enjoy or value I’m going to create different seasons for my put-abouts – like putting out Christmas decorations and taking them down. But I’ll create special groupings that change the look and feel of my space and give each item space in which to be appreciated. I’ll do this quarterly with the solstice and equinox which will give me a theme and a specific time frame. It will be fun to change the covers on the pillows, or drape some fabric over the backs of chairs

Tune into your space often and see what it needs from your. Notice how refreshing it is to change the look of your space, the energy, the focus.

Why do you need it where it is?

I happen to know that one fairly large Quan Yin statue of mine is in the wrong place because it was on top of a bookcase and looked great but my cat Sabrina likes to sleep up there and I thought she might knock it off. In fact a lot of things that had feathers on them or were woven are put away because her brother Sebastian really likes to play with feathers. He’d even jump up on the wall to try to reach them. Sometimes things end up in the wrong place for unexpected reasons.

Of course moving is going to allow me to rethink where everything goes but you can do that whether you move or not. For instance, in my present office my desk faces the door in good Feng Shui manner and I have a great view out of a window. In my new space it’s just not going to be possible to face the door but I can keep a good window view.

Are you using your space well? Is what you need handy? Are you hemmed in by things you don’t need? Clear your space so it holds just the things you need.

Make things do double duty

I am determined to keep a three foot high piece of driftwood that I bought in Oregon years ago that I consider my Goddess piece. It was on my patio in California and my deck here in Kansas but I will have no deck where I am moving and I still want that piece so I had to get creative. I have figured out that I will drape some drawers I use for office supply storage and make a meditation space on top of it using the driftwood as a centerpiece. I can lift the drape to get the stuff in the drawers and the rest of the time I have created a very special space to enjoy.

My computer desk already does double duty. The shelf that could hold stuff is totally bare – except when a cat sleeps on it. I have an open shelf bookcase that stores my USB connections and my microphone stand. The top shelf holds my phone.

Create levels. Use fabric to change a look, hide utilitarian things under beautiful things. Get creative. Make things do double duty.

Keep things you need handy

It is said we only use only 10% of our stuff. But how handy is it? Do you have to wade through a drawer of seldom used kitchen utensils to get to the one or two you use all the time? Do you have clothes you haven’t worn all year? Try hanging your clothes with the open end of the hanger toward you. When you use it put it back the right way with the open end to the back. Before long you’ll know which clothes you never touch and can send them out to be in service elsewhere.

What do you need close by? I keep my passwords printed on a sheet in alphabetical order that I can easily access, my family phone numbers are there too. I have a file nearby for quickly stuffing paid bills. My calculator is very close. But there are some things that do not need to be in my immediate vicinity that can be put on the bookshelf behind me.

Look at what you use and enjoy looking at most often and make it accessible.

Toss the “just in case” things

I had so many “just in case” things in my garage in California – interesting things that could be made into a craft project at some point. More gardening stakes than I could use on a farm because they came in a package of 12 or so. The slow cooker I have used twice in ten years. The big pot I needed when I was cooking for my children but no longer need for just me. Get real about the 10% you really need and place it where you can get to it. Give away the rest.

To prepare for this move I went through the large collection of written material that I keep in binders. I threw away nearly half. I kept material from courses I took, but I found that every time I had an idea for an information product I had made a small binder. A lot of them were still in the idea stage so I dismantled those binders. I rescued about two feet of paper to recycle in my printer. What have you prepared for and never done that is taking up space? Get rid of it.

Honor how you run your day

Several times a year rethink how you do your life. I rethink my life at the solstice and equinox. See what needs to change. Do you need to set up an exercise corner with your steps and dumb bells and pumping rubber stuff handy? Are you starting to cook more for yourself and need to create a better system for your recipes? Do you need to organize your projects in binders or files or some system that allows you to pull out the material easily and just as easily put it away? How is your filing system? Oh yes, you could put all of your computer hard drive on a backup drive and then just start to reinstall what you need. Now there’s a project for you.

Be aware of the energy

You have great control over your environment. How you care for it and what you put into it affects its energy. If you are surrounded by clutter, chaos, and abandoned and un-cared for items, that’s how you are caring for yourself. Take time to arrange your environment so it pleases you. If you keep it organized, put things away when not in use, and lovingly clean it regularly, you’ll feel that care you are giving yourself. You will know you are honoring the life you are living, the gifts you are giving and the service you are offering when you keep your environment simple and aesthetically pleasing.

Go through some stuff away and give a lot away – today.

A feast for your eyes

When you lovingly prepare your space you will find pleasure wherever you look. And when there are lovely places to look you will find your environment nourishing, replenishing and peaceful. Give thought to your environment and make it nourishing to you. Home is where we come for replenishment. Make it a safe haven.

How do you handle your stuff? Please share.
