How Plain Ol’ Mind Mapping Opens Doors

January 22, 2015 By Cara Lumen

intuition - cady

There is nothing like facing a blank piece of paper to sort out your ideas. Get out a pencil, a few sheets of paper, settle into an easy chair, close your eyes and wait. A question will show up or an organizational plan, or an outline, or… Let your mind take you on an adventure with stick figures, odd shapes, connecting lines, arrows and large and small lettering. Whatever shows up is perfect. This is your intuition speaking, the creative part of you that is freer than your organized mind.

Brainstorming is about capturing ideas

If you’ve ever been in a brain storming session, you know the rules are that you never reject anything. Every idea is acceptable because you never know when it will spark another idea. Mind mapping is simply a written form of brainstorming. It brings your ideas one step closer to clarification. It helps you to unconsciously express your thoughts in size, shape and position and shows you both connection and value. You are tapping you deepest cavern of creativity.

Use Plain Ol’ Mind Mapping for everything

For me, brainstorming works best with paper and pencils rather than software. I can place ideas anywhere on the paper, draw connecting lines, add arrows to show the flow, put ideas in order, or identify a core idea. Sometimes it all looks orderly. Other times it’s the act of drawing connecting lines that finally clarifies the idea in my own mind.

Write the words that come to you

When a question pops up, write it down. The act of writing clarifies. If it’s a list, write a list. If the idea is a picture, draw it. I was recently working to define the form of the Deeper Song Community. In the center, I wrote “Help Each Other Sing a Deeper Song” and put a circle around it. A list began to appear, a few of the words based on a conversation I had that day showed up. Then I wrote a question, “How do I connect them?” Options appeared. Suddenly in big bold letters, I wore “Teach each other.” That concept made a lot of options and ideas fall into place. I have used that odd-looking piece of paper to write new words for the Deeper Song Community landing page, for making a decision about how to connect us and to deepen my own understanding of the potential of the group.

Mind Map Everything

I have figured out time lines, sketched out logos, and organized the learning process in a course by using pencil and paper to capture my ideas. If I had tried to make these connections on a computer, I would be confined to the medium. With a pencil, I can sketch out a series of exercises, draw a smiley face or a path I want to take with signs pointing the way. All with a pencil, paper and a comfortable, contemplative chair.

How to Cultivate Deep Listening

An Exploration of the Unseen World

You have access to great wisdom when you cultivate deep listening.  It begins with your intuition, your hunches, your nudges, and moves into the deep listening of your inner voice and your imagination.

It’s a journey of learning to trust.  It’s the skill of learning to interpret.  And it is the open portal to the Unseen World.

95% of the world is Unseen, and even using hunches and visioning and inner voice listening, we’re going to miss a lot of the guidance being offered to us.

We just need to begin and once we cultivate the capacity for Deep Listening, the unseenWorld will find other ways to communicate with us, to offer us its gifts.

But we begin with cultivation Deep Listening.

I’m Cara Lumen, spiritual philosopher and founder of the Deeper Song Community. I am a cosmic explorer who consciously travels into the unseen world to serve as a bridge to help us expand our relationship with the spiritual world. I share what I learn and guide those who are ready to the next level so we can sing a deeper song.

Thank you for being a part of this journey.

In this episode of Reflections of a Deeper Song, we discuss How to Cultivate Deep Listening

A number of years ago I became aware that sometimes when I wrung. some really great ideas seem to be coming in from someplace other them me. I pictured a trio of Shakespeare type men with feather pens over my right shoulder telling me what to write.  Ultimately I came to understand that it was only be listening to my inner voice and I was just writing some really good stuff.

Give yourself credit for the guidance of your inner voice.  I’s you talking to you.

It is important to cultivate the ability to listen deeply because the more we listen the more we hear. We just have to practice more

There seem to be three levels to developing a Deep Listening practice.

– First we have to learn to recognize the Hunches and Urges that seem almost accidental in nature. But they are not.

– Then we begin to do more  Intentional Listening. Nut just trusting your intuition but actively calling on it for guidance.

– Ultiantely we begin to Cultivate a Deep Listening Practice and we come to rely on our inner guidance and wisdom  That’s the really fun part.

The first step in developing a practice of Deep Listing is to learn to hear your inner voice.

Think of a time when you had a hunch, followed it and it turned out to be right.  Were you surprised?  Were you pleased? Were you a bit amped?

Intuition is one way you Inner Voice speaks to you.

Think of a hunch you had that turned out to be true.  That’s your Inner voice giving your nudge. Notice how many times your intuition or hunches are right and begin to trust them and follow them.

Years ago, I began getting flashes of ideas that I began to immediately write into fleshed-out articles. It would be a phrase on television, a phrase I read. I just suddenly knew I was to expand on that and share it with others.  So I did.

Those flashes of inner knowing that I am to expand on a specific topic continue today and I pay attention.

Flashes of Insight are a form of your inner voice speaking to you.

As a writer, I listen to my inner voice and write down what it says. I am at the point that I literally feel myself get out of the way and let the words flow through my typing fingers.

I consciously get my human mind out of the way and let her rip.  No human mind in there, only trust and deep listening to my inner voice.

The unexpected flow of phrases and ideas grew until I knew I was generating them from a place of deep awareness –   far beyond the limitations of my human self.

Unexpected Inner Nudges are part of Deep Listening

How, then, do you cultivate Intentional Inner Listening? How do you purposefully talk to Your Inner Voice?

You begin to cultivate a habit of Intentional Inner Listening

You can begin with journaling.  When you write things down, your mind believes that information is safe and it moves on to access another layer, a deeper layer. So journaling is like peeling layers off to get to the core.

When I learned shamanic journeying,  a whole new world of intentional inner listening opened up. It is a form of meditation in which you set an intuition for your journey, go to your Sacred Garden within and wait to be given your answers in the form of metaphors – figures, natural objects. Whatever shows up is a metaphor that only you can interpret.  It’s rather imaginative with talking animals and shape-shifting rocks and helping spirits in many shapes.

You begin with an intention and see what shows up.

Once I learned that 94% of our experience is in the Unseen World I began to use shamanic journeying to intentionally go to the unseen world.  It is not a rapid process but I am persistent in my quest. I find myself sitting outside portals waiting for an invitation to enter, That may go on for several journeys before I am invited in.

In order to receive guidance from the Unseen World, you wan tot develop a  practice of Deep Listening.

When I mediate, my body gradually disappears until I experience myself as pinpoint of consciousness in my third eye  I am no longer limited by the physical realm, I am in the unseen world and all things are possible

Listen an you will receive answers.

Begin.  Perhaps you journal your thoughts because writing things down allows you access to a deeper layer.  Perhaps you draw with an intentional question to be answered and see what shows up.  Definitely meditate – use a mantra to quiet your mind.  Learn to do shamanic journeying if your like but as part of your spiritual practice is to give yourself space and time to explore the inner unseen world.  Listen deeply. There are messages just for you.

I love my Inner voice.  I can be watching television and one phrase comes leaping across the room to me and I quickly write it down and later explore  it though writing for my newsletter or my podcast.

I have Leonard to go even deeper in my shamanic meditative journeys.

I continue to be amazed at the clarity and wisdom and insight that is offered through my inner voice.

There are more things I am going to do to cultivate a practice of Deep Listening. I play my native flutes every day and have begun to use them to talk to nature, the weeping birch outside my window, and her swaying branches. I use an intentional hum to move vibration throughout my body and listen. When I exercise, I notice what muscles need and compliment hem on the good work they are doing and how much stronger they are dieting.

I journey every day and end up in amazing places in the unseen world.

I am working to cultivate easier access to a Point of Deep Stillness

I listen to my inner voice as I begin to wake up.  I try to remember my dreams

The Unseen world has many ways to speak to us.  We just have to learn to listen.  Speed time each day listening deeply.

  • I hope I brought you some new awareness, deeper ways to connect and insights and encouragement for your next steps.

The Cloak of Empowered Service

The Unseen world speaks to us through metaphors that only we are to interpret. It’s as easy as going within and asking what we need to know next.

I am being flooded with ideas for thees podcasts. New ideas keep coming in.  I took a shamanic Journey to ask what I should write about next in the way of teaching a process and I got back what turns out to be a whole wardrobe – of cloaks!

Cloaks to me are a mental you accept, a robe you put on that signifies your intention, your role,  your purpose.

I keep getting cloaks in my journeys as I accept a deeper roe in my unfolding.  What cloak is calling you? And does it take the metaphor of a cloak for you?

Welcome to Reflections of a Deeper Song.

I’m Cara Lumen, spiritual philosopher and founder of the Deeper Song Community I am a cosmic explorer who consciously travels into the unseen world to serve as a bridge to help us expand our relationship with the spiritual world. I share what I learn and guides those who are ready to the next level so we can sing a deeper song.

Thank you for being a part of this journey.

Today I want to talk about The Cloak of Empowered Service

I’ve been taking shamanic journeys for inner guidance for about four years, and somewhere along the line I began periodically feeling a cloak placed over my shoulders in these journeys – they seemed to signify a new step, a new commitment, a new role.  It was an honor to receive them, an honor to war them, and a responsibility to carry forward.

In each case, I was ready to accept this new role, this new Cloak of Calling. This cloak of Empowered Service.

But my most profound experience of leptin a Cloak of Empowered Service was in real life.  One the years if have connected with younger friends with whom I speak online on a regular basis.  At one point I began to write them collective email mostly as it pertained to their entrepreneurial businesses. It ultimately became apparent we should all meet each other.  I was the only one who knew each of them. I dubbed us the Rainbow Weavers and arranged a group call.

Now, I sort of saw this as a form of accountability, mutual support for our business group but that’s not what it is at all.

When I hung up from the first call I sat here in stunned silence. This was a spiritual group.  We needed each other as inspirational points of light.  And I was being called into service to guide us. – I was being asked to put on the Indego Cloak of Wisdom and become a Spiritual Guide.  I sat here for a long time feeling the depth of the calling, the unspotted turn it had taken, and my willingness to take on that role.

I like the image of cloak because I can feel it settle on my shoulders, I can feel its weight of responsibly and I can accept its calling.  It became a sign of my role and my commitment. My cloak is Indigo Blue with a translucent lining.  It is my willingness to serve as an explorer of the Unseen World with the responsibility of interpreting and teaching what I learn there.

You may experience this inner initiation in a different form but the experience of a cloak, a mantel of position being offered, and accepted is a profound experience of stepping into a new place of service, a new commitment.

Three ares to explore immediately come to mind:

1 – Where do you find your cloak?  Who gives it to you?  Do you have to accept it?

2 –  Is there is a specific Action of Acceptance – a commitment to the calling.

3 – How do you bring you cloak into your place of service and into your spiritual practice and let it guide your choices and your work offering.

I don’t remember the color of the first cloak I was offered in a journey.  I remember that I was surprised.  I knew it was an initiation of some sort, a calling.  As I remember there were flowers around the collar and maybe envy a wreath of flowers around my head.

And I can remember the specific Helping Spirit that gave it to me.  It was definitely an ignition, a calling, an initiation.  And I accepted. Even though I did not know the details.

I have been offered several cloaks in my journey.

A most recent one was at what I see in m journeys as the Indego Portal. It is a portal of wisdom. There is a large library there.  A golden library.

I have a guide as see as Indigo Woman. In one journey she offered me an Indego Cloak. I was aware of being initiated, of being promoted, of being called into a new place of responsibly in the Inner World.  My cloak was and is about inner wisdom, about exploring and interpreting the Unseen World,   And when I accepted it and put it on I was elevated to stand on the right hand of my Indego Woman Guide. When I accepted this cloak of Inner Knowing, this indigo clock of Wisdom I knew I was to teach, write, reach out from there. It was my place of service, the Cloak of Inner Wisdom.  The Cloak of Inner Knowing. The Cloak of Empowered Service.

I use this cloak of knowing as move into the unseen world to encourage and allow the messages to come, the metaphors, the ideas, the internal nudges.

Don’t rush this experience. Your experience may not be a lack at all.  And remember what we find in our journey are metaphors only we are interpret so your metaphor may be something quite different.  But when it is offered, it will guide you into your place of service – to yourself and to the planet and to the Unseen world

It’s an important metaphor. An important initiation.

When you are offered it, when you accept it there is a strong sense of coming home.

Is there is a specific Action of Acceptance – a commitment to the calling? Let this cloak, this metaphor for a sacred calling,  guide your focus,  your choices, and your awareness.

It’s an odd thing about our calling, sometimes we don’t think we are worthy of it.

Over the years I have used various adjectives to describe what I do – I use words like spiritual philosopher, explorer, guide, map maker.  I wove them into my bio descriptions.

But I did not realize until my unexpected calling into the role of a spiritual guide that I realized I had not yet – at least out loud – called myself a Spiritual Philosopher.  That seems too high a goal, too lofty a title.

And yet I took a Comparative Religion class in Collage.  My journey began very early. I became a metaphysic-an in the ’80s and read a great deal of spiritual philosophy.  I became a spiritual counselor in the Center for Spiritual Living in 2000 and I keep exploring – now it is the Unseen World.

We are what we think we are.  We are who we see ourselves as.  I am, indeed, a spiritual philosopher.  I get to own that label.

And that make the cloak settle securely around my shoulders.

Accept what you are called to be, what you are called to do.  Accept the calling of the cloak. When we wear our Cloak of Empowered Serve we step into that role.

When I experienced this initiation in my journey,  it was and is a sense of coming home, of the families, of stepping into a role I knew was mine.  And it was a sense of being elevated above what I had expected from myself or how I had seen myself. It offered a new awareness and commitment.

How do you bring you cloak into your place of service and into your spiritual practice and let it guide your choices and your work offering?

Remember, this cloak is a metaphor.  It is a form of initiation, an invitation, a choice, a commitment.  Bring your metaphorical cloak into your place of service and into your spiritual practice and let it guide your choices and your place of service.

For me, my cloak of Empowered Service is about broadening and deepening my connection with my inner wisdom and the Unseen World  For me it goes to the Indego Portal of Wisdom and it is the Indego Lessons I learn and bring back.  I can feel the indigo cloak come around my shoulders. Its weight, its protection, its support.

Whatever metaphor you find, whatever metaphor you accept, it is about putting on the mantle of service that is yours alone   The mantel of responsibility   The mental of stepping into your place, where you are needed.  Your calling. Your place of Empowered Service.

As you feel the weight of the cloak of responsibility, the cloak of service, the cloak of your calling.  Identify it, accept its call, put on the cloak, and accept your role.  It is a message bout your place of service,  your next step, your responsibility, the sharing of your light!

Each time you experience the clock of Empowered Service, this cloak of commitment to your specific calling, your places of service int the New Consigns, you will feel both supported and empowered.

After that Rainbow Weavers call, I simply sat here at my desk and felt the shift.  I served as a Spiritual Counselor years ago, sot the role is familiar and actually welcomed again.  I felt the shift in my role, the shift into spiritual leadership, spiritual guide.  My role in the here and now had become more clear and I accepted it because it was familiar. You see, I have been in service as an explorer of the Inner World.  I felt the Cloak of Empowered Service wrap around my shoulders in a perfect fit.

Journey to ask for your Cloak of Empowered Service. See what invitation you receive.

If it resonates , accept it

Think on that and see where it leads you.

  • I hope I brought you some new awareness, deeper ways to connect, and insights and encouragement for your next steps.

How to Build a Launching Pd for Your inner Work

95% of the wold is Unseen.  Think how much we have to learn when we figure out how to go exploring there.

We can, you know.  We can go exploring, we can learn, we can bring back ideas that will enrich our planetary life.

We do that by developing a platform of listening, a foundation for understanding and a launching pad for  exploring.

If you want to understand the increased creative power that lives in the unseen world, you need to build your own launching pad Then you can go exploring.

Welcome to Reflections of a Deeper Song.

I’m Cara Lumen, spiritual philosopher and founder of the Deeper Song Community I am a cosmic explorer who consciously travels into the unseen world to serve as a bridge to help us expand our relationship with the spiritual world. I share what I learn and guide those who are ready to the next level so we can sing a deeper song.  Thank you for being a part of this journey.

In this episode, we’re going to explore ‘How to build a Launching Pad for your Inner Work.”

I learned Transcendental Meditation in my 30’s. (I’m 87 now.)  Yes, I did it because the Beatles did it, but it was a rather amazing experience.  That was probably my first foray into the Unseen world.  There have been many since then.

The more I explore the Unseen World, the more I am shown.  I think we are taken to the next step when we are ready.  But here are several steps you can take to build your own launching pad for exploring the unseen world. I have a few easy ones to begin with.

Because working in the inner world is unseen work, we can’t exactly make any plans.  We must simply learn to open ourselves up to unexpected possibilities.  We can develop techniques to take us on the inner exploration but where we go is, well, simply where we go.  Our job is to stay open and learn as much as we can when we do journey to the unseen world.

First, we have to build our launching pad.

There are three foundations steps

1- Deepen your roots for stability.

2- Broaden your horizon by expanding your awareness.

3 – Listen to your inner guidance

Roots hols us in place

Roots are our foundation.  We get to build roots, but we also get to examine what we already have in place to be certain they are creating the foundation we want and need.

So how, exactly do we Deepen our roots for stability?

Let’s begin by seeing what foundation you are standing on.  Take a close look at your personal spiritual belief system.  Have you gradually and organically developed your own spiritual belief system based on an exploration of – whatever spiritual practice called to you?

Or are you are still caught up in what you were taught by someone else along the line that were really their beliefs, not ones you want to embrace

Question your beliefs. See what core beliefs are guiding you today and if, in the light of where you are in your life at this point in time, they are still valid. Release those no-longer-true-for-you beliefs. Question all of them. Expand your beliefs as you expand your consciousness.

I took a comparative religion class in college.  I had never heard of many of the ones we studied. I came away wondering how am I to know if what I believe (as a presbyterian encouraged by my mother) is right?  It’s a question I’ve been exploring all my life  The answer is there is no right – there are only variations of our human core longing for oneness.

I have built a strong foundation in metaphysics upon which I have layered Taoism and Shamanism. Each one of those conscious explorations has given me insights and tools for inner growth.  I have adapted and selected what called to me, what I wanted and needed. I continue to select and adjust every day as my awareness of the unseen world expands.

You deepen your roots by examining your spiritual foundation and making certain it is relevant for what you feel and think today.

The second step is to broaden your horizon by broadening your awareness

Look up . Look out  Look under.  Look over…Keep looking.

First, you have to believe there is an unseen world and then you have to believe you can get there.

Affirmative prayer was one of the first tools I used to have a conscious effect on life.  I spent a lot of time taking the negative thoughts and beliefs out of my vocabulary. It made a big difference.

Along with that was added a deep awareness of the power of my own words and thoughts.  One of the most life-changing phases is “you get what you believe you deserve and what you believe is possible.”

Change your thinking, change your life.  Change your words, change your life.

I retrained myself to speak and think in positive phrases.  It transformed my life.

So one of my early awareness was that my words and thoughts and actions created my life experience.

That was a form of working with the unseen World but at that time I did not see it as that.

The launching pad for work in the Unseen Word that I currently use is shamanic journeying. It is a form of meditation – visualizing, intuitive, receptive meditation.

From a still and contemplate place within, I create a Sacred Garden where everything is a metaphor that only I am to interpret.  And everything in the Sacred Garden represents some aspect of me.

When you ask questions of the Unseen World, you get answers. Some very obvious, some rather subtle.

I journey with a specific intention and interpret whatever metaphors show up – a guide, a protector, a helping spirit, an object, an element – that is meant for only me to interpret.  The unseen world speaks to me through my meditative openness.

The amazing power of what is thought of as “Energy Work” is in direct contact with the Unseen World.

The foundation I’m building includes an expanding use of sound healing and deepening my Qi Gong practice so I can create a strong launch pad on the physical plane for these inner explorations.

You deepen your roots by creating ceremony and ritual that speaks to you, that centers you, that deepens your connection with the unseen world

So we’ve deepened your roots for stability by expanding our connection with nature.

We’ve broadened your horizon by deepening your awareness and connection with the Unseen World.

Th this step is to listen to your inner guidance and learn o interpret what you discover in the Unseen World.

What do you want to explore in the Unseen World?

Your mind can’t tell you what you want to explore because, well, the unseen world is invisible and our mind is simply our physical planetary mind, stuck in its humanness.

To access the Unseen World all you have to do is be willing to explore.

Set an intuition, go to your Sacred Garden, and ask a question.  Then see what shows up.

You may know what you want to learn or you may need to ask your helping spirits to guide you.  I spent many journeys asking how to raise my vibration in order to help lift the vibration of the physical plane planet. You know – a small project.

Once you ask a question simply listen to your inner guidance.

Once I ask a question, the answers begin to appear. Show me. Guide me. How can I?  Please make that metaphor clearer.

Trust what shows up.  Trust that it’s the perfect message for you.  Trust that you’re interpreting it in the most supportive manner. Journal what you discover in order to give yourself more clarity. I sometimes draw a picture of the journey that helps me understand the message and serves as a reminder of what I learned.

I get an unexpected compelling idea and go exploring in a journey and that gives me a response that – of course – raises more questions or offers a wider variety of solutions.  So I choose one aspect and keep ongoing. I can also come back and explore another path.

I journey every day.

How do you interpret what you learn in the invisible world?

That’s up to you and what’s calling you.  I explore an idea that calls to me, figure out how to apply it, and write my ideas in posts and podcasts and my newsletter.

Sometimes I don’t have a complete answer, I simply have a new step to take which invites more questions.

Begin by exploring.

Begin with a simple meditative journey.  Set an intention, close your eyes, listen to a shamanic drumming track if you like, and see what shows up. Journal what you experienced and perhaps draw a picture.

Repeat as often as you like.

Explore your ancestors.  Explore your future self.  Explore nature and learn her lessons. Explore your Soul Star.  Explore the Unseen World. Trust what shows up. Trust that the lesson, the ideas for usage are just for you and it is time for you to hear it and understand it.

Deepen your inner work and go exploring in the Unseen world.

What’s your foundation?

What’s your spiritual launching pad?

You’re already a launching pad for your inner world exploration.  Know that.

Unleash The Power of Your Passion and Calling

January 5, 2016 By Cara Lumen

ocen waves

If you let it, your passion and calling can carry you to depths you’ve never dreamed.

As I watched the Kennedy Center Honors, I shed tears as I listened to the stories of people who did what they did because they simply had to. They were called. It was their passion.

George Lucas had a vision that was not yet possible to create in film – so he created the technology for the legendary Star Wars.

Yo Yo Ma played his cello with such power and passion and love that we cried at the beauty he brought forth as he shared his soul through his music.

Aretha Franklin sang a Carole King song that was powerful and rich and touched our hearts. She too, offered her heart, her talent and her passion.

What I heard were the stories of people who HAD to follow their passion. Who HAD to express their gifts. It was their calling and they followed it.

Give yourself over to your calling.

I have just crossed a personal bridge, or turned an important corner, or taken a giant step. I don’t know what it means or where it will take me, but I do know that I trust the call.

And even more importantly, I trust my ability to answer it.

My personal turning point had three elements

First, a small suggestion in an email from a friend steered me in a direction that I had been considering and partially preparing for, but suddenly, with that nudge, it was time to make it happen. The idea was there, many of the words were captured, but the format was what set the whole idea free. A nudge, the right moment, and right action – by me.

The second turning point came when a post I put up garnered powerful responses. It made me realize that the subtle spiritual and philosophical explorations I am being called to make are, in fact, needed and wanted. I trusted the call, the sign, the signal and committed to a path I had only been considering.

Finally, the emotion that was shared throughout the program made me look at my own life. Not from the standpoint of what I had accomplished in my 83 years but what I was perfectly poised to do NOW. I have the wisdom, I have the gifts, I have the philosophical insight, and most of all I have the calling to explore what I am compelled to understand – and apply – and live.

Art is when you add your voice to the composition. You put your passion in it, your soul, your gifts. And you share what you create with others.

I HAVE to figure out certain concepts and learn to add them to my life. I MUST write in order to figure out what they mean and how to use them.

And I am not complete until I share what I find with others.

That feels like passion. I know it is my calling.

Are you listening deeply?

Are you feeling with your heart?

Do you make room in your life to explore what calls to you?

It would be very good if you cleared space to follow your passion and calling. It needs you.

You need it.
