What would I do? If I were a person who was flexible and strong, what would I do? If I were a person who inspired a lot of people what would I be doing?
This great idea was suggested by James Clear and when I applied it, my approach to planning took a major change.
There were two elements I explored: what would a person who accomplished that do and what version of that was I willing to do.
If I were a person who was strong and flexible, I would:
Now, let’s stop a minute and acknowledge that I am 82 and there are already limitations on both strength and flexibility that I need to address . Age is not the factor, my starting place is. I have already seen outstanding improvements in my posture (too much computer for one thing) by using my two walking sticks which help me stand up straight and walk a “chi” walk. I even have a daily time, which is around 3:30. To get stronger I need to walk farther or faster or more often – or al of that. I get to pick. When it’s hot, I walk the halls so I will increase my walk to two rounds. When I am outside, I will extend my walk another half block and mark my calendar to add more length to it in six weeks. See how this goes?
I did this for eating better (make two meals in one night a week so I have meals prepared ahead). I did it for my spiritual practice (adding an afternoon meditation time. making both sessions longer and lengthening my Qi Gong practice). I chose what I was willing to do and I am committed to adding these small steps to my daily practice.
So what about my business? I found I wanted to change the “What if” statement to the present tense – I am.
I am a person of inspiring impact and I:
Raised the number of new people I want to attract to the Deeper Song Community. In my desire to let things unfold, my vision may be too small. I upped the number of new people I’d like to attract and I’m not attached to it. It simply raised my expectations.
I began to list the things I have in place: blog posts, podcasts, videos, webinars coming and I see those as a way for people to find the energy of the Deeper Song Community and gather around it. That portion of my work is free, it is easy to share, and the variety of topics and formats can widen the possible connections. All of those will make a difference, but teaching calls to me – creating processes and courses that increase self-awareness and help people move more deeply into their passionate place of service. I put some numbers down: 2 posts a week = 104 articles a year. 1 podcast a week = 52 podcasts. Then I made some decisions about how often to offer a video and how many courses I would realistically aim for.
Oh yes, I put down a time line – of the next ten years. I’m 82. I will be 92. What do I want my life to look like at 92 – and 102 and…
A person who expects to live a long time takes specific steps now in the areas of health and spirituality. And an old person who excepts to live a long time gets busy harvesting her crops and creating her legacy.
All good. All motivating. All doable.
If you are a person who…. what will you do?
