How to Eliminate Anger and Sadness

June 11, 2015 By Cara Lumen

Anger and sadness are emotions we make up in our own minds. When we are no longer attached to likes and dislikes, there is room for serenity. How do we learn to do that? Do you want control over the anger and sadness in your life?

Dissatisfaction comes from being judgmental

“It needs to be done this way – which is my way. I’ve never seen it done that way before, I don’t like it. How can you even think that? You are absolutely wrong!” That’s our mind making up judgments. Look at the dissatisfaction it creates.

What if we learned to see everyone as all one energy. If I see you as a reflection of me, we are the same stuff, we are both simply an aspect of our collective whole. If we are all part of a whole, there is nothing to be judgmental about. It’s like looking at a finger on your hand and being angry at it for being exactly what it is – a part of you. We are all one. We are all expressions of Tao. Being judgmental has no place in the concept of oneness. When you are no longer judgmental, you are filled with satisfaction.

Sadness comes from dissatisfaction

When we want something we don’t have, we are dissatisfied and we become sad. If we think something should be a certain way, we become sad because we don’t get things our way. When we think we deserve something and don’t get it, we become sad and discouraged. In actuality, everything that shows up is exactly as it should be. Look at it as the gift it is. It may be a lesson, it may be an insight, it may be an opportunity. Whatever shows up is perfect. Welcome it and you will be content.

Anger is a waste of time

When we get angry with someone, they don’t even know we are angry. We’re the one having a hard time. Anger comes from being judgmental, opinionated and wanting things to be a certain way. And that is very easy to change. Stop yourself from being judgmental. Stop wanting people to be different. Remember, we are all part of the web of life and every single strand is vital to the whole. Let others be how they are. Your job is to manage you, to be the best “you” you can be.

Investigate your anger and sadness and it dissolves

Change can be as simple as noticing you are angry or sad and deciding not to keep those emotions. Release the anger. Release the sadness. Those come from your mind. Remember that everything is one, the same energy manifesting in different forms. You have the power to release your anger and sadness at every moment. Instantaneously.

Work with what you have before you

In every situation there is a gift, whether it is easy or difficult, disappointing or rewarding. There is a lesson of understanding, patience, acceptance and clarity. You actually want these lessons – they make you a happier person in the long run. Rather than fight what shows up, examine it for its unexpected gift. Then celebrate your new insight.

Let life unfold

You can’t do anything about what shows up. But you can do a great deal about how you respond to it. The more you learn to let life and circumstances unfold, the happier you will be. Simply shape things as they come. Accept them or step aside. Use them or let them go. Notice them or ignore them. There is always a choice. What shows up is simply what shows up. It is part of the natural flow, the movement of the cycles. Embrace the spontaneous, the free, the natural. Let life flow in, around and through you.

When things seem to be in discord return to the center

Life is always changing. You are always changing. Let life move to you, through you and around you as you learn to embrace it’s constant flow of gifts.

When you seem engulfed by unwanted emotion, stop, breathe, and return to the natural voice within. Know that you are all there is. . All there is is you. When you are no longer attached to likes and dislikes, there is no anger and sadness.

Become Your Own Teacher

April 9, 2012 By Cara Lumen

red-laptopLearning is about understanding a concept well enough to apply it to your own life..  Learning is about growth. It’s about deepening our understanding, owning what we learn and using it to make our lives more meaningful. We are our own teachers.  We choose the curriculum that takes us where we want to go.

Let your passion be your guide

I would love to be home schooled today.  I would be free to explore whatever excites me. I would be free to develop my unique talents. I could spend as much time as I wanted delving into any subject that stirred my passion.  I could learn as much as I wanted to, or as little as I wanted to.  Someone, somewhere on the internet is teaching what you want to know.

Apply that knowledge to your life and business

There is usually a specific purpose in your search for knowledge.  You want to make some changes in your own life.  You want to learn a new skill. You want to create more value for your target community.  You want to find a way to become more involved in a cause you believe in.  When I learn a new skill, I often turn it into a book to share with others. My blog posts reflect my curiosity, my discoveries and my passion. Apply what you learn and share it with others.

Let the insights find you

All sorts of things spark my imagination. As I read the blog posts of others, I am often inspired to explore a topic more deeply.  I write my interpretation of the topic.  I explore my experiences with an idea.  I create a new approach to creating something that I then teach others. Knowledge is everywhere.  It is in the conversations we have, the idea we develop and the need to know more that is with us always.

What do you need to learn next?

Search for both motivational and practical learning opportunities.  Do I need to improve my writing skills or do I need to learn how to format an e book?  If I want to teach a telecourse, what do I want participants to learn and how do I want to deliver it? Do I have to learn the back end of a webinar software or do I need to focus on my delivery technique?  Build on what you already know and learn the skills and concepts that take you to the next level.

Create your own learning plan

Divide your time into large three-month segments and set one major learning goal for each quarter.  Then outline what you want to learn every week and how you might go about doing that.  It may be that you need to learn sound editing software or how to publish your book on ereaders. It may be that you need to learn how to give a better talk or make your own videos. You can always improve a skill set.  It may be that you need to do more research on a topic you want to master. Whatever steps you need to take to complete your project, schedule them and learn what you need to create the result you want to achieve.

Uncover new resources

If you look, you will find it. There are tons of free telecourses on line. Sign up for those that teach you what you need to know next. Thoughtful bloggers supply insights on both practical and philosophical concepts.  Find a few bloggers and follow them. Spend a portion of your day reading more on your topic of interest from sources.

Be a life-long learner

There are discouraging statistics about the number of people who don’t read books as adults and who don’t learn anything new after they leave school. You’re not one of those people because you are reading this article.  You are a life-long learner.  You are curious. You are an independent thinker. You are constantly exploring new concepts. You keep up with change even if it takes a bit of extra study.  Be curious.  Be aware.  Be thoughtful.

Apply what you learn

Learn what you need and want to know and then apply it. Apply it creatively. Apply it instinctively.  Apply it organically.  Teach others to use what you have learned and help them achieve their own unique results.

Learn what you need and want to know

Go exploring. Let your intellectual travels open up new paths you’ve never been on before.  Take your own unique collection of knowledge and make something special to offer others.  Write your own curriculum.  Revel in what you learn and go out and share your excitement with others. You are your own teacher.  Be a good one.

How to Push Through the Hard Stuff

August 4, 2010 By Cara Lumen

 by Cara Lumen

cup-winnerIt takes courage and persistence to learn something that seems hard, or figure out something that has never been easy for you before.  But there are times we simply have to push through.

Decide why it is important

A 74 year old friend of mine is getting a divorce after 35 years of marriage and every day is a challenge for her because, as sometimes happens with women in that age group, she relied heavily on her husband to make the decisions and understand the finances.  And now he is out of the picture.

Suddenly being on your on can come in a variety of ways, including the sudden loss of a job.  You find yourself faced with challenges you never expected to have to meet.

How do you push through that kind of an in-your-face challenge?

First of all you start looking within yourself to find out what is important to you.  What do you need in your life right now?  What has been missing in the situation that has just changed and how would you like to see this next part of your life be different?

Is it important that you get a new job?  Is it important that you find a new place to live?  Is it important for you to change your health habits?  What is important to you and in what order?  Is it health – the stamina and energy to go do the interesting things you want to do?  Is it safety – food, shelter, being solvent? Is it love – giving, receiving, and accepting love?  Is it feeling worthy – valued, knowing you have made a difference?  Or is it something else?  What is the most important change you need to make right now?

Explore what you need to know in order to make it happen

My friend suddenly finds herself dealing with real estate agents and loans and setting up her own bank accounts and figuring out her new budget.  It has been overwhelming for her since she has never before made an attempt to understand these things.  But she is gradually doing it.  It’s been stressful but she continues to work to figure out what she needs to know.

In the change you have chosen to make, what do you need to learn in order to make it happen?  Do you need to take a course, read a book, or get some coaching?  Take that next step that leads you toward your goal.
Get help at the speed you are prepared to accept it

Ask for help.  And make the person helping you give you the information at the level and speed that you need in order to own it.  Yes, own it.  None of this I-sort-of-got-it excuses.  If it’s important to you it’s important to understand how to make it happen. Learn what you need to know in order to make it happen.

As I watch my friend work to figure out her options I see that sometimes she doesn’t even understand the basics.  She gets swamped and frustrated with the jargon that she has not explored and needs the information to be brought down to its most basic components.  Know that might be the case when you are learning something new and make certain you understand what they are saying before you move on.  Build a strong foundation for this new information you are gathering.  Ask the questions you need to have answered.

Take small steps and acknowledge yourself

Don’t beat yourself up with the I-don’t-understand’s.  Pat yourself on the back with the I-got-it’s!!!!  Acknowledging yourself is one of the most important things you can do when you are pushing through a perceived obstacle.  Create an acknowledgement list and write in at the end of every day. Listen to the encouragement the people around you offer.  Thank the people who help you learn what you need to know.  Give gratitude for your progress – for each and every step you take.
Stick with it till you’ve got it

Be the little engine who could – I think I can, I think I can.  Because you can.  Whatever it is you set out to do you can do it.  Did you know that when an idea or an opportunity presents itself it will be of the size and shape that you have the ability to handle.  Sure it might stretch you a bit.  It might make you wonder what you’ve gotten yourself into, but if you had the idea and you decided to make it happen, everything you need to bring it to fruition will show up in the perfect time.  So stick with it till you’ve got it.

And then go on the next step!!!

What Can You Teach That People Will Pay You For?

July 28, 2010 By Cara Lumen

by Cara Lumen

reference-bookI maintain that the one thing people will continue to buy in today’s economy is knowledge.  Knowledge is empowering, knowledge increases in value over time, and it keeps working forever!  What do you know that you can teach others and get paid for?

What you already know

Chris Brogan recently wrote a post about his typing skills – how he was a really fast typist and as a blogger that put him hours ahead of others.  He suggested we look at what skills we need to strengthen or add in order to make life easier or faster or better or more productive. And it got me thinking about what skills I might need to add. And if I need to learn stuff, others do too and I started thinking about what I knew that I might teach others.
I am a natural organizer of ideas and I can help thoughtful leaders effectively organize their ideas so they can educate and inspire their chosen community. That can mean a business idea or an information product. That can be effective blog content.  But the bottom line is I know how to organize and in my coaching and my information products  I teach others to organize their thoughts and ideas and set up systems that fit with their learning and working style to keep them focused and productive.
So if I can teach people how to organize their ideas, what can you teach?
It may be as specific as “10 different ways to combine 8 food ingredients to make 7 meals for your family. “ It could be “Best resources for auto parts for your antique automobile.”  It could be “How to teach your old dog new tricks.”  What is your passion?  What do you love to do?  What can you teach? That’s the gift you have to give.

What does your target community need from you?

To create a successful information product it has to be on the topic your target community wants and needs from you. Who have you been targeting?  What are their current needs?  What can you offer them?
When I look at my target community I think they want to be empowered to take control of their future.  So I’m offering them ways to learn to create their own signature information products and to improve their writing and idea organizing skills as they do.  With a range of signature products I can offer different price points of information and meet the needs of anyone who wants to learn what I have to teach.

How will yours be different?

Here’s the deal.  There is a ton of information out there for free – if you have the time and energy and willingness  to wade through it.  But what if someone did that wading for you and offered you a focused summary with action steps you could read in 20 minutes.  Would you pay for that???
Your job is to take your years of expertise wrapped in your unique spin and experience and put it in an information product that makes it simple to consume. You will research new information; you will absorb it, sort it, compare it, update it and turn it into a product specifically for those who want to learn it. You will teach others what you know and get paid for it. How does that sound?
Information products create passive income
The fabulous benefit of information products is that once you create them people can buy them for years to come while you are off doing something else.  They also increase your expert status.  The more you write the more people understand how much you know.  And they are drawn to you to learn more.
One idea can be leveraged into a multitude of products
Some time ago I was scheduled to give a talk in a course I was taking and even as I prepared the outline I knew it had to be an ebook.  Later parts of it went into my radio show Passionately On Purpose.  Your ideas may end up as blog posts, article submissions, or part of a teleclass or a home study course.  You may take one idea and break it into little chunks or you may combine it into a big product.  If you have a list of 10 ways to…. you also have ten articles  – one on each of those ten ways.  Once you start creating information products you’ll be kept busy with the new ideas they generate.

Your job as teacher

We are all teachers in our own way. We teach by example – the kind of life we lead, the words we speak, the actions we take.  We teach our children.  We exchange ideas with our friends.  We lead our group.  For me teaching is about learning as well as sharing.  Every time I prepare a new course or ebook I learn a tremendous amount. As I organize the material and select the order in which it needs to be taught I learn what is important. As I create exercises that help me own the work I adjust them to help others do the work.  Even if you don’t look upon yourself as a teacher, you can see yourself as someone with something of value to share.  Whether you tell it to someone, or write an article on it, or create a course around it, you are giving others the gift of your knowledge.
What can you teach?  And when will you do it?
