Stand In You Own Truth
She is planted in his own integrity, and there she stands, gnarled and knotted, perfectly at ease with herself, her roots deep in truth, her branches held up to let the light in. – Stephen Mitchel’s Second Book of Tao.
I want to be that person I think I am that person. Standing deep in my own truth. My branches held up to the light
We are who we decide to be – the choices we make – the things we believe – the values we embrace. All of those choices contribute to what our life looks like and how it turns out.
Knowing that, knowing that your thoughts and values are what propel you forward, it’s interesting to reach the senior age of 87and look back over the long winding road to see how my choices, my awareness in the moment affected where and who I am today.
Some of my choices were weird. Some were uninformed, some were unaware, none were wrongly intended. But each choice contrived to the path I have traveled and more importantly where I ended up. Just as your choices do.
Welcome to Reflections of a Deeper Song.

In this episode, we think about how we can Stand In our Own Truth
I am very drawn to the Tao Te Ching, particularly Stephen Mitchell’s translation. He went on to write “The Second Book of Tao” and that’s where I found this passage that sets a goal for me – and perhaps for you.
He uses the male pronoun in his book. But I wanted this for ME! so “he” became “she”.
What does it mean to stand in your own integrity? What does it look like, feel like?
How to put my roots deep in truth?
Do I always hold my branches up to the ligh?
“She is planted in her own integrity, and there she stands, gnarled and knotted, perfectly at ease with herself,”
What does it mean to stand in your own integrity? It is your morality? Your honesty? Your integrity certainly impacts your choices.
Integrity- it means honor – honoring the values that guide you and honoring the principles of conduct you have built around them. Those choices that you have made over time. That has taken some constant awareness and evaluation on our part.
There is so much we need to question when it comes to what values we have built our integrity upon.
Some of or values were embedded in us by our parents and the lessons of our childhood. We need to examine those and question them and reevaluate them to make certain they are relevant today.
Our integrity is our own code of honor. What is important to us. What we value. Who we value. How we interact with others. And that has evolved over time and some of those beliefs have never been questioned – but they should be.
Now is a good time to examine your integrity. You have changed. The world has changed. Look for the obscure beliefs that you are standing on. The ideas that were so built into your upbringing that you don’t even know they are there. Look closely and question everything.
I expected my children to grow up and go to college and live above-average lives because that’s what I had done. But my firstborn child had her brain-damaged by a forceps delivery and that was not to ever be her path. I remember looking to see what her gifts were and saw that she was very good with people. I changed my measuring stick for what “success” looked like.
It’s tricky to question your beliefs because there are so many we take for granted. Sometimes it to examine your experience – or lack of – and raise those beliefs from the realm of a personal expense to a broader understanding of a larger viewpoint. An understanding of the repercussion. The recognition of a core need for change.
What have you learned? What old belief or level of unawareness do you need to change.?
Look more closely, become more aware and examine what you may unconsciously believe because of simply not knowing or not having an experience of or not being aware of. Expand the breadth of your awareness and how you are responding in your word experiences. Awareness will bring change.
Stay aware of your integrity and question the foundation you are standing on and be certain it is where you want to stand.
“She is planted in his own integrity, and there she stands, gnarled and knotted, perfectly at ease with herself, her roots deep in truth,”
“her roots deep in truth,” That means we want to plant our roots in truth. What truth? Who’s truth?
We’re back to questioning – everything. Look out for your assumptions, particularly those that are limited by your being a physical plane presence. When I first began to use Reiki to send energy outside of time and space, I had to step into a new belief system, a new level of expectation that I had not experienced before. But I did begin to send energy outside of time and apace and spent time with others who were doing the same. And my belief and my expectations changed.
We learn from how we spend our time, where we focus our attention. That includes what we see and what we begin to experience as our truth. Look closely at who you have surrounded yourself with and choose your companions with awareness and a desire to raise your vibration through the experience. Fist Know our own truth and then make certain you stand in it.
“her branches held up to let the light in.”
So we have begun to make certain we are planted in the integrity where we want to be. We have learned to plant our roots more deeply in truth. How do you hold our branches up to the light?
You stand in the light though your inner work. Your spiritual practice. Your constant aware and aligned choices.
My spiritual exploration is deep and wide and high. It is drawn into every aspect of my life. And because I live alone I am free to spend my time as I wish. I lift my arms to the light in many ways. I play my native flutes, I drum, I meditate, I do shamanic visioning, I write spiritual philosophy, I fully experience my cat, I sing to nature. We can experience the light anywhere and any time in any way.
Being in light, embracing light is a conscious choice, a cultivated choice, an aware choice. And we continue to expand it.
Cultivate a time of stillness. tie when you stop your world work and move into the spiritual realm.
I have begun to play my native flute several times during the day. When you are playing a breath instrument your mind stops working I have learned to play to nature. One night there was a wonderful and dramatic storm. I listened and responded with my flute and it was an extraordinary bonding.
Recently I discovered the seven notes my flute plays can correspond with my chakras and through my intention, I can send a healing vibration to my self, my body, my experiences, and even my future.
I like thinking of myself a garnered old tree (I AM old so it’s fairly easy.) I like looking at my spiritual path to observe my choices and my growth What began in a comparative religion class in college and led me through begin a spiritual counselor in the Center for Spiritual Living and on to become a shamanist has led me to be an explorer of the Unseen World. Each choice, each experience, was a part of my journey that established my roots and built the foundation for me to stand on. And as I followed my own inner calling, each choice becomes more and more aligned with my own integrity.
How are you doing? How is your integrity? Have you examined it recently? How are you roots? Where are they planted and do they need any fertilizing or pruning? How are you holding your arms to the light? Can you reach even higher? What can you, what will you do more of?
When you know you have and are consensually making thoughtful, wise, aware choices you will be perfectly at ease with yourself.
She is planted in her own integrity, and there she stands, gnarled and knotted, perfectly at ease with herself, her roots deep in truth, her branches held up to let the light in.
Think on that and see where it leads you.
